Wrong IP? 169.x.x.x

Hi,

So I am not 100% sure this is where I am supposed to post this. A quick search didn't find anything that looked like it would help. So a quick back story I had a bunch of equipment sitting around an (what i think is) an MSI mobo a spare amd fx8350 the mobo doesnt have a video out (odd) so i picked up a cheap rx 460 had a spare 2tb drive and a couple of 120gb ssds to hook up to test out make sure this is what i wanted before i buy a bunch of hard drives for it. on paper unraid looks exactly like what i want. as i was going to buy a nas and have this hardware run to transcode my plex looked like unraid could handle both on one machine and host one of my game servers if i wanted to move it. So thats the hardware setup currently. When i setup the flash drive and booted to it on this machine plugged it into my monitor anything near what would be the edge of the screen just goes off (like the text is displaying bigger than the physical screen) so im assuming it is booting the the drive because at the bottom i can see the top of the letters and looks like it says login. the line just above that however has an ip address of 169.x.x.x dont remember all digits but if i rember correctly its the IP of the nic (or is it windows?) when its not being given one by dhcp. it is plugged into a switch that plugs directly to my router i can run another cable straight from the router if need be (router is handling dhcp ) so i am guessing because it is pulling the wrong IP and not a 192.168.x.x i cant browse to it as the getting started guide says. So i guess my question is. 1 how do i get unraid to fit my screen (if i can) and 2. how do i get it to pull the right IP is there a way to set a static one? (im guessing thats in the web gui that i cant browse to) also mobo only has one network port.

These are some basic commands for ifconfig aka the ipconfig of the linux world. ;)

http://www.tecmint.com/ifconfig-command-examples/

ifconfig eth0 YOUIPHERE

Will basically set your default nic to desired ip address.

root is your login and currently there is no password until you set it normally in the GUI interface when you use your browser typically.

I'm not sure about your letter sizing thou.

Last time I saw an IP address of 169.x.x.x it was my machines way of saying its not getting an ip or something is in conflict.

Thank you for the link and info i. Only other "monitor" i got is a projector ill try hooking it up to that see if it shows on the screen correctly. then again i booted it into windows and had to use amd's software to shrink the screen down so is probably a issue with that card not unraid. if i can get everything to display on screen i will give the command a try. if not .. ill try anyway and hope im typing in the right thing lol.

You don't technically need a screen.  Once you get a valid IP, access through webui or SSH....
