December 2, 20169 yr I've been using unraid happily for around 3 months now. Most of the problems i've fixed by googling and reading the forums, however i have no clue what happened in this case. The onboard graphics is dedicated to unraid, the gpu is passed through to a VM. Normally when i boot up unraid, the passed through VM starts up just fine. This time, the VM did start, but there was no video signal. So no problem; i'll just restart the VM. I tried this a couple of times, but it didn't help. I then checked the unraid console, and the console was on the login screen with coloring errors. I saved the diagnostics and rebooted the server into safe mode. After it got past "starting cpuload" the screen went black, and came back with scrambled characters. This is when i started to worry and came here. The server diagnostics are in the attachments. Looking at the syslog starting from line 2633, could it be my CPU dying on me? December 2, 20169 yr Author Memtest was run for around 12 hours when I first built the system. That was good for around 3 passes. I'll start another memtest right now just in case. Edit: spelling
December 2, 20169 yr Author Another attempt at rebooting the server. New diagnostics shows this at line 2679: Tower kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null). Weird thing is, is that the GUI just stops responding, however i can SSH in, and it responds to commands. Edit: Okay i found what is going on. The driver for the internal graphics card is not working. When I let unraid take the HD5850 everything works fine. When unraid has the internal gpu, it bugs out and passthrough does not work. So there's no way for me to manage the server, except through SSH. I don't know if this thread should be moved to the bug forum, as I do not know how to reproduce it. I do hope someone can help me with finding a solution. tower-diagnostics-20161202-2117.zip
December 3, 20169 yr Author PEBCAK Somehow the settings in the auto starting VM, got the onboard gfx card passed through, instead of the dedicated gfx card. This results in unraid itself crashing. Please thrash the thread. Thank you.
