Will this combination of hardware work?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I was planning to buy a Drobo but just in time I discovered this nice piece of software.. Now i'm going to order some new hardware to build an unRAID server but before that I want to be sure it's going to work. So I have put together this list of hardware:

  • Cooler Master Centurion 590 Case
  • HKC USP-5565 ATX12V 2.2 - 565 Watt
  • ASUS P5QPL-AM Motherboard
  • Intel Celeron E3300 CPU
  • Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5 2 GB Memory
  • 2 or 3 x WD Caviar Green WD15EARS 1.5 TB SATA-300 buffer: 64 MB

I think the main priority is that the motherboard will boot the USB flash drive.. So what do you think?

Thanks

The motherboard should work just fine.  It uses the ATHEROS L1E Driver NIC chipset which is not one commonly found on unRAID boards but it is listed on the Hardware Compatibility Page.  Just make sure to use the newest version of unRAID as the driver for the ATHEROS L1E Driver chipset what added in the 4.5 beta series. I also noticed that it only has 4 on board SATA ports though.  You should probably look for a board that has at least 6 so that future expansion is easier.

OK good comment!

New list:

  • Cooler Master Centurion 590 Case
  • HKC USP-5565 ATX12V 2.2 - 565 Watt
  • ASUS P5QPL-AM Motherboard ASUS P5QL PRO Motherboard
  • Intel Celeron E3300 CPU Intel Pentium E5300 CPU
  • Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5 2 GB Memory
  • 2 or 3 x WD Caviar Green WD15EARS 1.5 TB SATA-300 buffer: 64 MB

There is no need for the faster processor, unless it is cheaper.  unRAID stock will not requite much processing power, I run my server on an Intel E1200 which is a dual core that runs at 1.6GHz. The new motherboard looks better, though you might need a video card installed for it to even run.  I suggest finding an old PCI vid card for the purpose.  I have an old PCI ATI Rage 2MB card in my setup so the motherboard will boot.

Yeah I just found out it doesn't have onboard video.. That's a must so here we go again :)

  • Cooler Master Centurion 590 Case
  • HKC USP-5565 ATX12V 2.2 - 565 Watt
  • ASUS P5QL PRO Motherboard ASUS M4A78 PRO Motherboard
  • Intel Pentium E5300 CPU AMD Athlon II X2 245 / 2.9 GHz - Socket AM3 - L2 2 MB ( 2 x 1 MB )
  • Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5 2 GB Memory
  • 2 or 3 x WD Caviar Green WD15EARS 1.5 TB SATA-300 buffer: 64 MB

OR

Will my old still laying around dusty and loud pc do?

  • Asus A8N5X
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
  • Corsair 512MB PC-3200
  • BFG NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT OC 256MB

Maybe with the new Cooler Master Centurion 590 case, HKC USP and some new fans to make it clean and quiet again..

I prefer the Asus M3A76-CM motherboard for various reasons :

- It's 15$ cheaper

- It has 6 onboard sata ports instead of 5 + 1 external sata!

- the 760 chipset is less powerfull graphics-wise, there's no need to have a good 3D gpu on unraid (less power needed!)

- It's a smaller motherboard (also less power needed)

the only downside would be the absense of a hdmi port, but that could be fixed with an adapter if you really need a monitor for maintenance

I have this board paired with a very cheap single core AMD sempron 140 (AM3 2,7Ghz). A dual core cpu is overkill if you ask me. Parity checking is superfast on this machine (65mb/sec) even with western digital green drives.
