Replacing an array device

Featured Replies

Hi people

I'm currently using an nvme drive as an array device called 'disk 1' it contains the ISO, DOMAINS, APPDATA, SYSTEM directories for UNRAID.

I want to replace this drive with another smaller SSD/nvme drive. Do i just copy the contents of the current drive to the new one?

Please advise on the correct procedure for migrating to a new drive.

thanks

There is no automatic way to replace a drive with a smaller drive. You will have to New Config with the drives you want to include in the array and let parity rebuild. After you have the array reconfigured you can use Unassigned Devices plugin to mount the old drive and copy its data to the new.

Assuming you're not using parity you could assign the smaller one to the cache slot, set all shares to use cache disk="prefer", disable all vm/docker services, run the mover, then do a new config and assign the smaller to disk1 again, you'll need to reset shares use cache setting.

I'm not using parity it's just a single nvme drive listed in the array.

I thought I could simply mount the new smaller SSD , copy the contents to it and then assign it to the array. I then remove the old drive and that's that.

Didn't realize you only had the one array disk and no parity. johnnie.black's idea is probably easier since you can do it all from the webUI and let unRAID take care of copying the data. Whether you do it his way or your way you will have to New Config.

So, if I got this right, I do it like this....

1.) Assign new nvme drive to cache pool

2.) Check use cache disk is set to 'prefer'

3.) Disable Docker/VM in webui settings

Please explain the following tasks in more detail and how I do it...

4.) Run the mover utility

5.) New config (how)

6.) Rest Shares (how)

7.) remove old nvme drive

4) WebGUI Main page click "Move no" (below the start array button)

5) Tools -> New Config

6) Shares are all top level folders, they will be automatically restored

7) On step 5, after doing the new config, assign the new device to disk1 slot and leave old device unassigned, it can then be removed at any time

In the end reset the use cache setting for your shares from prefer back to what they were.

when using 'new config' do i  'retain current configuration' or not? I dont want to lose any vm xmls', share config etc....

Not, that's just the array assignments, it won't delete shares or VMs config.

ok does 'move now' move the docker and domains img? If so, I don't think it worked since there is only 70MB used on the cache disk yet the array disk had 22GB used (mainly the IMG files).

Yes, if you shutdown docker and VMs services. (and set those shares to prefer).
