iPhone Safari Web Browser cannot browse/render the unRAID web interface

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a problem with using my iPhone 3G (Firmware 3.1.2) and trying to browse the web interface on my unRAID server 4.5.1 Pro. I use my WiFi connection to connect to it, which my iPhone can access all other local/external web sites fine via my WiFi link fine.

When I get prompted to enter my User Name/Password for the unRAID server, Safari on my iPhone spits the dummy and exits back to the Spring Board. Has anyone experienced this on their iPhone 3G too? I've did the obvious and cleared the cache, history, restarted it, etc... but to no avail. Any ideas or suggestions? Cheers!

Ah, OK, at least I'm not the only one with this. I use the iPhone as a universal remote for everything, IT-related in my home which has a web-based interface. It is just a pity I can't get it to work with the iPhone as their isn't no other browser alternative, nor would I imagine Apple App Store would approve a web browser alternative either :(. Thanks for the info.

iCab eh? I'll have to give it a whirl. Thanks for the tip, I'll keep you posted.

An update on installing iCab, it was a no goer, it did the same as Safari on the iPhone too, doh! It's a shame, I can control every box in my house bar my favourite one of all. I can only do this via MSTSC to a host running Windows and use FF or IE to interface with unRAID.

The the forum there was mentioned of a iPhone application called iStat, which can monitor a Linux/UNIX boxes, so I'll might have to chech it out :)

I believe any web browser you download from the app store would still be based on the version of web kit installed on the phone, and thus suffer from the same problem.

You might try using unmenu.  I was attempting to make an iphone application that would interact with the default web interface (summarize drive stats and allow simple array control, etc)  and if I set a user name and password it would barf when trying to give log in credentials (I'm assuming this has something to do with emhttp not being "real" webserver) using the built-in APIs so it may be endemic to the entire platform (possibly OS X as well).  Getting the data from unmenu seems to work fairly well though (but there's no authentication).

Yeah I had the same prediction when iCab failed after the credentials too. I might have to investigate into the iStat to see if anyone as successfully had the server component running on a unRAID server yet, it looks pretty swish and professional too!

Are you trying to connect within your own home?  If so type the IP address of your unraid server into safari. as the address.  It should bring you to your main Tower page.  For some reason //Tower does not work.

Yes, IP is being used, the problem occurs once the username/password is entered.

Yeah, regardless of whether you use the hostname or IP, it spits the dummy after the credentials part is done.

If you install and run "unmneu" and fetch it via safari, it works just fine via iphone. However, if you use the default web pages, then it get's broken after the log in page.

I got same problem with login from iPhone Safari. I think it's firmware 3.1.2 that killed it. It was all working fine before I upgraded to 3.1.2.

I have nede that also but now I use the the Telnet app on the Iphone so now I can I get to the terminal and power down the server and copy me files ;D

There may be some hope on the horizon, the "Opera mini" version for the iPhone has been submitted to the App store (check out http://my.opera.com/community/countup/ to follow the status), so we'll just have to see if they approve the app, or choose instead to very clearly prove their unwillingness to allow competition with the native Safari browser...

For anyone wondering about this still... The Opera Mini browser was approved and is up live now.  I just downloaded it to test and it does indeed work like we would have expected.  I have my unRAID main page password protected and when I browse to it and fill in the info the page proceeds to load just fine and I can see everything i need!!

For some unknown reason I cannot browse within LAN, WAN IP addresses function though, i.e. if I enter http://192.168.0.5, the browser regards this as if it were an internet domain name (WAN) and gives error. Did you need to change anything in the settings? I am using iPhone 3GS with 3.1.2 (jailbreak).

Not really sure, i will have to test it when i get home.  I am out of my local LAN and have a dynamic DNS set up so i can view some stuff inside the network.

That explains now, since I thought you managed to browse within LAN. Unfortunately, I cannot browse with Mini Opera within LAN so it does not help unless I open a port at the router to WAN which I do not want. Could you please let us know if you could sort this out within your local network?

When i get home later tonight i will see what i happens.

Opera Mini cannot browse without WAN as it wasn't designed that way.  Opera mini uses a proxy server to render all pages (nothing is rendered locally by the handset) so you must have an external connection to allow their servers to render the page.  many people choose not use use Opera browsers for this very reason (security issues), people are afraid of their passwords having to pass through one more hand before reaching the proper person.

That is annoying isn't it, why wouldn't it work through a standard WiFi connection and then go through it's proxies like it does anyways? I can't see any reason why their would be a limitation purely based on the medium which it uses to go online.

I have Opera Mini on my phone and it is great for pushing pages onto my phone quite fast (loads faster then the stock standard Web Browser enbedded on my phone), but I use it through my 3G data service which my carrier provides. I suspect that Opera and the Phone telo's are in bed with each other, or maybe that was the only way Apple allowed Opera to get Opera Mini running on the iPhone? Dodgy I say.

Nah, it's just the way Opera Mini was designed. While that works pretty nicely with my old Sony Ericsson GSM phone, I can see how it might be frustrating to use on a smartphone.

I've actually tried Opera Mini on both a standard and Nokia and a Nokia smart phones (not on the iPhone yet), both appear to be fine, in fact it is actually a great web browser, rendering pages quite fast, multiple tabs support and extra options that the default browsers don't have improving user interfacing.

It is just annoying by the fact that most to all smart phones these days have WiFi and you can't use Opera Mini via a WiFi link, meaning you cannot connect to your unraid server's web interface. The work around how ever that if your smart phone has a VPN client, you might be in luck, but this adds to the complexity of getting this going.

It seems unless you have unMENU installed, you really can administer your unraid server via the web gui, on a iPhone that is. The only way I can talk to my unraid server using my iPhone is via a Telnet app through the CLI, or via the web gui on my management server, but this is a little bit cumbersome at the best of times.
