December 18, 20169 yr Community Expert Looking to move to v6 of unraid is the reiserfs the only(& still) one that spins down the drives when not in use? Spinning down drives is a feature of the unRAID OS, not of the filesystem. And in fact other operating systems can spin down drives too with whatever filesystem they are using. I am using XFS filesystem for my array drives with unRAID V6 and my drives are spun down most of the time.
December 18, 20169 yr Author That would make sense as to anything else I played with using XFS/BTRFS drives did not spin down. Do all drives spin up using XFS/BTRFS if an item your opening is located on one drive(volume) only This was another issue I did not care for using non-unraid products (using XFS/BTRFS)
December 18, 20169 yr Community Expert If reading, only the drive being accessed spins up. If writing, the drive written and the parity drive must spin, unless you configure it to use turbo (reconstruct) write. With turbo write, all drives must spin when writing.
