Preclear failure

Featured Replies

I've installed an 60GB Kingston SSD from an old machine today, but preclear is failing.

It's failed on 'zeroing' and 'erasing the disk' and I've tried more than once. The SMART report is reporting everything as passed.

Any ideas why this may be happening?

I've just updated to 2016.12.23a and run it again and still getting an error zeroing the disk?

  • Community Expert

Have you done a memtest recently? I had this once due to a bad RAM stick.

It's a bug introduced early today.

Please update and try again.

Pardon me jumping in, but where can I get today's update?  The "stable release" lists the latest as 11/5/16 while the prerelease latest is 12/07/16.

Please send me the log:

Go to /Tools/Preclear, enable Help in the menu bar,  click Download on the help box and send it here.

Where does one get the 2016.12.23a update?

No problem. I have the file, but how can I send them to you directly rather than posting here?

Upload it on a sharing service and send me the link via personal message.

Gracias.

Hiya. New user here. I've just set up a new unraid server and am experiencing the same problems when I try to preclear drives. It doesn't matter if its a HDD or SSD. I have run memtest for several passes without any failure prior to installing unraid.

I have PM'd you the link to my log files.

My hardware is as follows:

Supermicro X10SL7-F

Intel Xeon E3-1231V3

32GB Crucial DDR3 ECC Memory

4 x 5TB Toshiba MD040ACA500

2 x 3TB Toshiba DT010ACA300

1 x WD5003AZEX

1 x Samsung 830 512GB SSD

6 x Crucial 256GB SSD

No problem. I'm running it on the SSD now, as that one is much quicker being only 60GB.

Will let you know how it goes... If it does fail, which logs, both the preclear and diagnostics?

  • Author

SSD ran through without any problems, so now running on the 4TB drive. Fingers crossed  :P

I'm having a similar issue with a WD Red 6TB drive. Every time I run preclear, it hangs my system. I updated the preclear plugin to the version published today. I watched it run for 1:56 and then it stopped sending status telemetry. I'm sure that I cannot access my shares or anything since it has done this 3 times in the past 3 days. I have to reboot (unclean) every time and that sets me up for another parity check. I've run Preclear in the past with no issues?

Anything I might do? How do I get the log you need?

VERIFIED - lost all communication with my server. Have not rebooted yet. I have another conversation "Preclear causes unraid to hang" that has some pictures attached from a previous fail. The monitor has those underlines flashing on the monitor like before, but you cannot do anything - can't login, can't do anything but force an unclean shutdown.

You need to go to Tools > Preclear Disk, click Help in the menu bar, then click on the Download button inside the blue box. If you need to use the CLI terminal, you can find the log under /var/log/preclear.disk.log.

Since you're having hang problems, it's a good idea to post the Diagnostics (Tools > Diagnostics) file too.

I'm getting failure too. I tried using 1.15 and it reports "sdo" in use and fails immediately. I updated and am running again.

Thanks for the reply gfjardim.

I can try to wait for the "last possible moment" - like 1:54 on another attempt to push the button (and hope there is some stuff in the diagnostics to point to the problem). But a second or two after that and my machine is incommunicado - from anywhere.  You can't get into the machine from GUI, from SSH, or login from the console. The server is frozen. There's no pushing the power button on the console and getting a clean shutdown either. It's "hold the switch" and dirty shutdown time.

I guess I might let it fail, remove the unraid USB and manually copy the diagnostics files on a laptop before I restart? I did install the "Fix Common Problems" plugin but it found nothing. Perhaps if I set it to run extended and then kicked off the preclear, would I get additional useful diagnostics until it failed?

By the way - even though I'm having an issue - your work to build this tool is much appreciated. Having to type those preclear commands in manually sucks. Thanks for creating such a useful tool.

I am having the exact same issues with the server hanging...

Just had the same issue... failed at zeroing... (99% of the way done).

EDIT: Sorry...

4 disks, all 4 TB.  v12.23a

Updated to v12.24 and am trying again.

EDIT.2:

Successfully pre-cleared 480gb intell 530 ssd
