External Logging to a removable device?

Featured Replies

I wonder if anyone else thinks it might be nice to have an option to write your system log file (or a duplicate) to a removable USB drive?  If the "echo copy" filename was based on DATE/TIME, the restart process would not overwrite a previously recorded logfile. If there was a GUI to setup the echo copies, you could plug in a new device and point to it and -VOILA- a current copy of the existing log is placed on the new device and you could remove the previous one - then you could plug that into a laptop for forensic investigation or support issues.

What do you guys think? I've run into a situation that basically renders my server in a "hung" state and it would be REALLY hard to get a logfile. Only if I did a shutdown (unclean) and pull the unraid USB out and read it from there. This would be a way to put a temporary drive in a free usb port (like a front port) and let it fail, do the restart, and remove the drive. Then I could leave the Unraid USB device alone. (Really important if your device is on the motherboard, internally.)

It's one of those "nice to have" options - I don't know how hard it would be to do?

Have you tried the Fix Common Problems plugin in Troubleshooting mode?
