So I totally messed up a working Unraid server. I have four 1TB drives of music, photos, and movies that I can't access anymore. I use windows and I believe most of the data is intact. I want to recover the data onto a Windows 7 machine and totally start the Unraid server from scratch, reloading the data onto "Tower." I've searched the Wiki, FAQs, and forums without finding a method I can understand to access the drive data from Windows. I've downloaded Putty and accessed Tower, typed ?mc (Something Commander), but couldn't tell what to do next. I've removed an Unraid drive and connected it to my Win7 machine but I can't get it to show up. I've downloaded RFSTool but don't understand how to use it. How can I see what is on my Unraid drive and copy it to my windows PC so that I can reload it to Unraid? I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find a solution that I understand.

You should not have to do any of that to see your data on the drives.

 

Easiest is to load a new flash drive with the current version of unRAID, then boot your old unRAID server with it.

Then, assign two of the data drives to it and start it.  Do not assign any parity drive.

You should be able to browse to your "new" unRAID server and get to all the files on those two drives.

 

Then, un-assign them, re-assign others, repeat as needed.

 

But  before you do anything, if you can get a copy of th system log for analysis we might be able to get your existing server back online.

 

I have absolutely NO idea if any of the reiserfs read-only drivers have been updated to work under Win7.  (never tried, as I don't have Win7 here at all)  You might need to find a PC with winXP if you go that route.

 

 

Why don't you tell us what you screwed up and maybe we could help you get the server working again without going through all the pain of starting over?

 

The easiest way to access the drives is to assign them in unRAID and then start the array. Then, you can just access the drives from the network. If you don't know what drive was the parity drive then DO NOT assign a parity drive. Just assign the drives you think are data drives as new data drives and use the "restore" button to get it started. You can even create a new flash drive with the free version of unRAID and use that to access 2 of the drives at once.

 

Honestly, it would be easier to sort out your problems if you take the time to figure out a few commands to use on the command prompt or how to use midnight commander. Get the data drives back on-line and then sort out any file problems you have.

I really think my array is cooked. First, I added two Seagate 1.5 tb drives to the array making one the parity drive. I was unaware of the Seagate problems I have since discovered. Next the server kept crashing, especially while rebuilding the array and copying data from one drive to the other. I didn't save my syslogs until I started researching problems online (too late!).  I clicked the restore button in desperation and I tried altering the flash drive by replacing files (also probably a big mistake).

Is upgrading to the latest version of Unraid by replacing the BZimage and BZroot files the same as loading a new flash drive? I have the Pro version 4.51.

Yes, you should be able to just replace those two files from the ones in the new 4.5.3 distribution. 

 

As far as starting over... Unless you assigned a data drive as a parity drive you have not clobbered the contents.

You might have clobbered parity, but that is not an issue.

 

Simply boot on the new release, un-assign the parity drive (for the moment) press "Restore" to get a clean new configuration with only the data drives assigned, and then post a syslog.  We'll see if there are any oddities.

I upgraded to 4.53 and now my server is stuck loading bzroot on reboot. bzimage loaded fine and after bzroot I get 11 rows of dots and it's stuck. What's going on?

That disk, #9, was my old parity drive and worked flawlessly until I screwed up my system replacing it with a 1.5 tb Seagate.

Of all the numbers in the report, the one that looks unusual is:

That seems to say your disk drive lost power while the heads were loaded 2530 times and had to retract the heads to protect itself.  I'd be looking for an intermittent power connection to the drive.

The reason the server kept shutting down was because the processor fan had come loose. The computer kept shutting itself off because it was running without a fan on the processor. I've fixwd the intermittent power problem. How do I fix the array? I've been able to check my data disks using 2 drives at a time and all of my data is intact. I have no idea about the condition of the parity.

The reason the server kept shutting down was because the processor fan had come loose. The computer kept shutting itself off because it was running without a fan on the processor. I've fixwd the intermittent power problem. How do I fix the array? I've been able to check my data disks using 2 drives at a time and all of my data is intact. I have no idea about the condition of the parity.

Go back to your original flash drive.  You can upgrade it to the new unRAID version by copying the new bzroot and bzimage files to it if you wish, (I'm assuming it has a license key to allow you to assign more than 2 data drives)

Again, un-assign the parity drive.  Just assign the data drives.

Press "Restore" to force a new disk configuration.

 

If all looks good, and you can see all your files, stop the array and assign the parity drive.  When you next start it it will begin the process of computing parity on all your data drives.

Easiest way to erase a drive is to run the preclear_disk.sh script on it, but it must be done before you assign the disk to the array. 

 

To start the array with a parity drive, just assign the parity drive and press "Start" 

Once you get parity calculated never again press the button labeled "Restore" unless all your data drives are healthy and you just want to set a new disk configuration and re-compute parity. (It immediately invalidates parity forcing a complete re-calc when you next start the array)
