E5 2683 V3 sanity check before I buy please

Featured Replies

Hi there, I'm looking at upgrading my unRAID server that has been going strong for many years (e8400 core 2 duo w/ 2 GB ram).

Essential needs are:

--> Up to 5 simultaneous 1080p Plex transcode streams

--> Up to 4 simultaneous local Plex streams (no transcoding)

--> Docker containers for Plex, nzbget, sonar and deluge (vpn)

--> A few different Linux VMs for multiple purposes, the primary one being software development (QT5 for embedded Linux).

The following parts will be reused from my current build:

--> EVGA 650 superNOVA

--> CM Stacker (original) case

--> MX 300 525GB cache drive

--> 11TB disk array spread over various 2,3 and 4 TB drives

--> Fanless ATI GPU (don't remember the model)

I have a budget of roughly $1000 CAD to upgrade the board, CPU and memory

I'm thinking of the following components:

--> E5 2683 V3 (OEM SR1XH) (~500 CAD from EBay)

--> Asrock X99 Taichi

--> 32 GB 2133 DDR4 (haven't picked a brand yet)

Anything I am missing here? Thought, suggestions, criticism are all welcome. Thanks.

Did you build this in the end? I have just bought that CPU and was also thinking about the same motherboard as it looks good value...

No I didn't end up purchasing this.  I really want to go with a Ryzen build but it looks like there are a fair number of issues with Ryzen and unRaid.  Hopefully they are sorted out soon.

Yeah I bailed in the end. Bought all the bits. Built it and realised I'd built a massive server with more space than I'd ever use, louder than my TS140 for a lot of memory for basically the ability to have more VMs than I can now which would be normally switched off... Sent it all back :)
