I want to fake a HDD fail with 14 HDDs attached - Best way to do it?

Featured Replies

I want to fake a HDD failure with 14 HDDs attached, the HDD I wish to "fail" contains CCTV data that has been archived to another UnRaid so isn't critical if I lose it.

Only problem I have is that with 14 HDDs attached I don't have a spare 300gb+ HDD to swap it with.  Is there a way I can use the same HDD with the data removed and rebuild to it?

I'll put the "Failed" HDD on my 8 port IDE Controller Card.

Due to various reasons I can't get to 14 HDDs at the moment.

1./ My 8 port IDE controller doesn't want to work with UnRaid

2./ The Promise TX2 2 card Bios Limit

3./ My Mobos Onboard IDEs take parity recalc to 12000+ minutes! :o

4./ I currently only own 3 available Sata HDDs

So I've faked a bad HDD under 4.0beta4 with 9 HDDs (2 Promise controllers full of & 3 Sata HDDs).  I've done this test twice (well the first time with only 6 IDE HDDs) and both times have restored the HDD from parity just fine.

I will attempt a 14 HDD setup HDD rebuild just as soon as I either resolve the issues above or I buy more Sata HDDs.  I'm not short of starage space right now so I won't be buying more disks soon tyhough.
