December 29, 20169 yr Don't think this is a new request on the forums but I wasn't able to find a solution using search. My issue is with disabling the unraid command line from showing on a PCIE video card on boot. On my motherboard bios I set the iGPU to be the primary display but when booting unraid it takes over the PCIE video card instead. I don't have any displays connected to the iGPU so I think this is what causing the issue. I want the PCIE video card to remain off since I have a few monitors connected to it that will be pass through in a workstation VM occasionally. Any suggestions on what I should do to achieve this? Thanks!
December 29, 20169 yr What are the BIOS options for display? I suspect it's set to default to the integrated graphics, but the add-in card is still enabled. So if no display device is detected on the integrated GPU, it's simply displaying on the "next" display device it finds -- in your case, a dedicated card. Normally this doesn't hurt anything -- you can still pass the card through to a VM -- but in some cases (especially with older cards) this can be a problem. You didn't say whether or not you've tried passing the card through to a VM, so it's not clear whether or not you actually have a problem. If your card DOES have a problem using pass-through when it's being used as the primary UnRAID display, there's a simple work-a-round ... connect one of your displays via a VGA switch [e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Round-Press-Button-Switch-Splitter/dp/B0053WXOMQ/ref=pd_sim_147_6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=T0PCJR95REVXSD2S6SX5 ] => connect the VGA Out to the display; the VGA 1 input to your integrated graphics output; and VGA 2 to the dedicated card. You would then just select VGA 1 when you boot to UnRAID ... since the system will "see" the display it will boot fine; and when you want to use the dedicated card you simply select VGA 2.
December 31, 20169 yr Author Hey Gary, thanks for the response. I ended up getting a dummy hdmi plug https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FLZXGJ6 to trick my motherboard into thinking there is an actual display connected. But yes I have the PCIE video card for a VM. That all works and now this plug makes sure my monitors don't come on after an unraid reboot.
December 31, 20169 yr The emulator is a good idea -- eliminates "no display" issues with any video adapter that requires an HDMI device.
