March 4, 201016 yr i have been using unraid for a few years now and i LOVE it... to this point I haven't had any problems with power outages, but last night i lost power for a few hours and it made me think about it raised a few questions... 1) what happens if i just installed a new disk to replace a failed one and the system is rebuilding the data onto it and the power goes out? would i lose everything? or would i just lose my progress on the rebuild? 2) what if i had installed a new disk to expand the array and it was in the process of doing this when the power went out? what woudl happen? 3) is there a scenario where a power loss woudl result in complete data loss? I am thinking of getting a UPS now. i was looking around on the forums and it looks like there is a way to set it up to shut down gracefully when it kicks over to battery. i will have to look more into this... i don't know a tone about linux so hopefully its not really difficult to set up this script. I was looking at this UPS: http://www.amazon.com/APC-BR1500LCD-1500VA-Outlets-BACK-UPS/dp/B000NDA5E0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266409994&sr=8-1 has anyone had any experience with this one? In order to get the shutdown script to work with it, I assume it needs to be connected to my unraid server via usb right?
March 4, 201016 yr 1) what happens if i just installed a new disk to replace a failed one and the system is rebuilding the data onto it and the power goes out? would i lose everything? or would i just lose my progress on the rebuild? You would have to use the "trust my parity" procedure when the server came back up.... i.e. unRAID would not come on line and you'd have to do some manual work to get it back online. But your data should be OK. The real fear when rebuilding, is if any other disk dies. Get a UPS... even if you don't have it talking to unRAID to initiate a shutdown, 99% of my power outages are just a couple of seconds, and any small, dumb UPS will take care of that.
March 4, 201016 yr Author yea i am definitely going to get a ups but unfortunately my power outages are generally just the opposite of yours - usually when it happens it goes our for a few hours at least. so i want to be sure to figure out the shutdown software/script.

Easiest way to install the ups software and the powerdown script is to use the package manager in unMENU. It basically ends up being just a few pushes of a button for it to install all needed for the APC UPS you are purchasing.
March 4, 201016 yr Author that sounds awesome... would you mind posting a link to the info about unMenu. I was just searching for it on the website and cant find it...
