Win10 VM doesn't boot after power outage

Featured Replies

Hey all, hope this is the right place for this. Here goes:

I recently had a power outage which killed my unraid box; it was running a win10 vm and an ubuntu vm along with several docker containers. After bringing the server back up, there seemed to be no problems with the array, the docker containers, or the linux vm, but my win10 seems to be hosed.

I'll try to describe the symptoms. After starting the array, the vm is marked as running (I have it to auto-run). It goes into recovery mode, but then tells me I have to select an operating system in order to continue. Getting to this point takes upwards of 10 minutes, so I haven't sat in front of the comp just watching what happens. In some instances, it prompts me to give it the type of keyboard, in another instance, it wanted me to reapply the windows image; no option gets me to be able to restore my vm.

I then forced the vm to quit (have you tried turning it off and on again?) and attempted to restart the vm, but got an error message in the unraid dashboard, telling me that permission was denied reading the .img file for my vm. This persists until I reboot the entire server.

Any help resolving either the windows issue (likely out of scope for this forum) or the permissions issue would be very appreciated. Happy New Year!

About my system:

Unraid v6.2

3 disks + 1 parity for storage

2 hdds for cache; vm disk images are here

Plenty of room on the drives

32gb ram
