System Migration Pata to Sata

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Is it possible to migrate from one server to another without losing any data even though the drives may show up in different locations?

For example I have a Pata motherboard with 2 pata controllers. As my system has grown, I've had to switch to SATA drives using PATA/SATA converters. So far it's been ok, but I have started noticing some drive seek errors, etc. I'd love to switch over to a SATA mother board and continue to use my PATA cards until I'm fully using SATA drives...Will this be an issue? If my data is all correct and I move over to the new system, I'm assuming my drive numbers may go all wacky and out of sync. Can I force the drives to the previous assignment...drive1, drive2, etc and then restart the parity(if needed) or just start the array up again?

Currently:

PATA Motherboard

2 PATA cards

drive 1 SATA w/Pata-Sata converter (Parity drive)

drive 2 SATA w/Pata-Sata converter

drive 3 SATA w/Pata-Sata converter

drive 4 SATA w/Pata-Sata converter

drive 5 PATA drive

drive 6 PATA drive

drive 7 PATA drive

drive 8 PATA drive

drive 9 PATA drive

drive 10 PATA drive

drive 11 PATA drive

What I want to do:

SATA Motherboard

2 PATA cards

drive 1 SATA drive (Parity drive)

drive 2 SATA drive

drive 3 SATA drive

drive 4 SATA drive

drive 5 PATA drive

drive 6 PATA drive

drive 7 PATA drive

drive 8 PATA drive

drive 9 PATA drive

drive 10 PATA drive

drive 11 PATA drive

Does anyone see any issues that may occur when I do this?

Thanks in advance!

Just take a scree-shot of the "devices" page before you switch everything to the new system and re-assign the same disks to the same logical slots in the array on the new.  Do not initially un-assign or assign new disks or you will be forced to re-compute parity with the different (either greater or lessor) set of disks.
