Looking for suggestions on growing my large Unraid footprint to XL

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Looking for some experienced system builders to weigh in here. I'm currently running a pretty hefty Unraid server with the following specs:

Dell R710 chassis

Dual Xeon X5690

192GB RAM

6 X Seagate 8TB ST8000AS0002 drives

2 X Samsung 256GB 850 EVO SSDs for cache drives

2 X IBM M1015 SAS Cards flashed to LSI 9220-8i in IT mode

I run this primarily as a Plex server, but run some other general purpose compute as well (all from docker containers). This works phenomenally well and meets my needs 100% EXCEPT I'm running out of space and I don't have any more open drive bays.

I've looked into a variety of ways to grow the storage footprint outside of the box without having to replace the whole machine, and none seem like a slam dunk. I've looked at some of the Dell branded Powervault DAS devices on the used market and those seem to have their own issues and I would need to replace my LSI cards to give me an external SAS port. Space cooling and power is not an issue.

Any suggestions here? Thank you!

I don't really think you have a choice but to go with an external enclosure and a SAS expander or replace your 8TB drives with 10TB ones, but that hardly seems worth it.

i think there is no need to replace LSI cards - just place some 5x3 or 4x3 enclosure near your server and choose appropriate SAS cable with sufficient length from your existing LSI card to enclosure..

see here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12405.0 , try read from the end :)

Those are all internal drive cages (which won't work in my server), not external enclosures. Any pointers on the latter?
