Fix a friend's Broken external HDD with old photos

Featured Replies

Hey

I have a problem with a external USB Hard Drive.

It's a friend's old HDD with lots of photos.

He asked me too look into it.

I tried it in Windows but nothing happened.

So I plugged it into my unraid and it actually was discovered in Unassigned Devices.

I shared it to SMB and I could browse the files, but as I entered one of the generated folders from unraid "§Recycle Bin" folder from my recycle bin plugin.

The HDD died and now it just spins up for about 30 secs then it gives out a 0.5 secs beep sound then restarting itself doing the same thing all over again.

I believe that unraid is trying too start up and spinning up the disk immediately?

I get this error in the log when I plug it in

Read Capacity(10) failed: Result: hostbyte=0x01 driverbyte=0x00

Here's a guy fixing it by delaying the spin up?

Can I do the same thing in Unassigned Devices?

Thanks for suggestions,

If it's the USB interface, then could you shuck it and plug it in via sata?

Unfortnately don't have the equipment since the USB connector on the HDD is in the way.

I only got the USB connector the left and I only have normal SATA connectors in my computer, this is IDE I believe? See photo here at my pushbullet link
