Mixed issues with pfsense on VM

Featured Replies

So i have been trying out pfsense as VM over UNRAID.. and i have been having multiple issues as expected but now i have come to point which i am not getting anywhere..

Just to list down few of the initial problems i had:

1. Was not able to passthrough the Intel NIC card for the VM- pfsense only - it never booted up - I gave up on it and i am not too sad about the speeds so far..    :-\

2. After bridging the 4 ports of the NIC and using it with pfsense, the first 2 port, WAN and LAN1 works perfectly fine but LAN2 and LAN3 does not work as in, i have enabled LAN1, LAN2 and LAN3 of IP's 192.168.1.x/24 192.168.2.x/24 and 192.168.3.x/24  with DHCP and the client devices get the IP but no traffic is possible, not even pings. I am assumed this is pfsense issue and raised a request there for support. https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=123332.0

After a lot of fiddling around, i got a particular scenario working as explained below.

eth0 - UNRAID host connection - 10.10.10.1

eth1 - WAN - public IP

eth2 - LAN1 - 192.168.1.1/24

eth3 - LAN2 - 192.168.2.1/24

wifi router - AP- connected to LAN1 - any device connected to the AP works fine. No issues.

Laptop connected to LAN2- Works fine.

Issue 1:

Now I was trying to bring up  VMs(WIN 10 & Ubuntu) on UNRAID with the bridge port of LAN2 for internet connectivity. Testing with Win 10 for now. The VM is getting the IP correctly. It is able to ping the LAN1 IP, devices connected to AP and WAN IP but not the external network/ISP modem/gateway IP.  So no internet traffic...

The funny thing is that the other devices cannot ping the VM,i.e, no response from VM on this. I want use wireshark on VM and check if the packets are reaching but no connectivity to download wireshark.

The pfsense packet capture shows that packets are reaching the expected ports..

Issue 2: this is expected but i am trying find a solution. I want the UNRAID host also able to be connected to internet so that i can download the plugins etc, anyway to do that with existing topology without complicating it more?  :-[

Any suggestions to solve the above issues with be really helpful..plz help..  thanks in advance..

anyone has any idea..

It took me forever to get bridging to work, that is, where 2 added in nic cards would communicate through br0 on my server, but always with weird inabilities to ping different local and web addresses (one would not ping local but would internet, the other was the opposite.) After trying multiple configurations and bridging in pfsense, I have no clue what settings actually made it work. Additionally, after trying to pass pfsense my a mellanox 10gbe card and having it completely ignored, I moved on.

I can't check what/how I set it up because i ditched the idea of having a pfsense router on unRaid and now just use a standalone low power computer I got off craigslist for 10 dollars. Setup was a breeze with zero issues. I would recommend considering doing that instead. UnRaid seems to complicate what is otherwise a fairly straightforward install.

Thanks 1812..

I will try some more things over the weekend. The whole idea was to get good hold of pfsense.. if nothing works, it good i did not buy the full version.. i will move on to esxi or go back to promox or even try arch linux..

EDIT: So basically i have given up on trying to make pfsense work on UNRAID.. Never ever going to try that not even vyos even though they have template. i have an old pentiumD lying around somewhere, will try to make it work on that.. hate having too many system in small room..

BUT  that is still not my major problem anymore...

None of the VMs already created or the new ones can be assigned a ports(attached screenshot). it does not show up in GUI.. but it does show up on console.. DO i have to reinstall UNRAID?

Sorry for multiple posts.. I dint want to create a new thread for the new issue..

How make the ports visible in VMs? Is there way to reset to factory default?

On the top right of the vm creation/edit window, there is a toggle next to the words "basic view." click that to change to advanced view. It will then show you your network settings and more.
