January 7, 20179 yr I sent a request to [email protected] back on the 29th of December, and have received no reply... I'm hoping someone here can help me... My question is: I am purchasing a HighPoint Internal 4 SATA-Port PCI-Express 2.0 x4 SATA 6Gb/s RAID Controller Lite Version RocketRAID 640L adapter card for my Intel Server Chassis (Intel S5000VSA motherboard), and I am trying to figure out what Linux Kernel unRAID Server Version 6.3.0-rc6 uses so I can download the appropriate software package... There are many choices for Linux, these are: Open Source Driver Fedora Core RHEL / CentOS SLES SuSE Debian Ubuntu Jan 7 / 2017 > Update: I have tried the above adapter on the above listed system, and thankfully the motherboard sees the adapter card, and therefore the BIOS on the card runs fine and sees the attached hard drives with no problem.... The issue I'm having now however is once I boot unRAID, the hard drives attached to the controller do not appear in the Array Devices list. I have checked the "Tools", "System Devices" option, and it does list the RocketRAID 640L Adapter Card. Is there a driver I need to install? I'm not sure why the attached drives do not show up in the array list... Any help would be greatly appreciated...
January 7, 20179 yr Community Expert Your question about which software to download isn't relevant since you won't be able to install anything for this. Not entirely clear what you mean when you say the drives don't show up in array devices. Do you mean you can't select them to assign to an array slot? Boot up unRAID with the adapter installed and drives plugged into it, then go to Tools - Diagnostics and post the complete diagnostics zip.
January 7, 20179 yr Author Yes, I can't select the hard drives attached to the adapter card as the hard drives attached to it do not appear at all... I can't assign them to an array slot as they are not listed... I will post the diagnostics as soon as the backup of my TV Shows completes (this will take a while, as it's currently only 51% complete, 11 hours and 30 minutes to complete at an average of 40 MB/s).
January 7, 20179 yr It wouldn't surprise me if the diagnostics tells us that it is a Marvell chipset problem. But we'll see when they are posted. On a related note - Sorry to hear that you went for a HighPoint card, I hope it works out for you. My Rocket 640L disaster taught me to never ever buy budget controller cards. Much better luck with secondhand quality cards of types commonly used by others in the community.
January 8, 20179 yr Author Here is the diagnostics you requested.... The hard drives attached to the controller still don't show as being there when assigning drives to the array... rg-server-diagnostics-20170108-0049.zip
January 8, 20179 yr Community Expert Controller is not loading a kernel driver so it's not supported by unRAID. 04:00.0 RAID bus controller [0104]: HighPoint Technologies, Inc. RocketRAID 640L 4 Port SATA-III Controller [1103:0641] (rev 01) Subsystem: HighPoint Technologies, Inc. RocketRAID 640L 4 Port SATA-III Controller [1103:0641]
January 8, 20179 yr Author I thought this card was supported by unRAID... I have seen other posts stating that it was supported... I have even loaded the "Script to enable SATA Controllers without kernel modification" from this post: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19882.0 Is there no way to make this controller work? Is there a PCI-Express SATA III controller card that will work with unRAID Server?
January 8, 20179 yr Community Expert The thread you linked mentions the 640, not the 640L, a quick forum search: Ok so I didn't read enough before purchasing the HighPoint Rocket 640L (which does not work with unRaid), so I'm exchanging it for a Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 (I should receive in 3 days). My question is the procedure I need to go through to swap out these two cards. Currently the Highpoint has 3 drives connected all 2TB drives. 1 has no data on it, 1 has about 100GB of data and the other is my cache drive. Do I

Rocket and RocketRAID are different as well, allthough some cards have both designations printed on the PCB. HighPoint's naming schemes and revisions leave a bit to be desired... Not that it really matters, I wouldn't let any of those cards anywhere near my hardware.
January 8, 20179 yr Author Ok, well that was the third adapter card I've tried... Sent the first two back because the motherboard wouldn't recognize the card, so I was unable to access the adapter card's BIOS to set the attached drives... The third one (RocketRAID 640L) was finally recognized by the motherboard, so I could access the BIOS and set the attached drives, only to find out that unRAID doesn't support the card... Bummer... I will now have to return the RocketRAID 640L and hope to get my purchase refunded (again)... Can anyone please tell me what PCI-Express SATA III Adapter Card is known to work with an Intel S5000VSA motherboard and also works with unRAID Server? Please note as the Intel motherboard is somewhat older, the (2) PCI Express slots are PCI Express x4. Also, as the Intel motherboard only supports SATA II, I would like to use a SATA III adapter card that's supports adding an internal port multiplier so I can run all of my attached hard drives in SATA III mode...
January 8, 20179 yr Not SATA-III, but the trusty old Adaptec 1430SA cards work just fine with UnRAID, and are available for very nominal prices on e-bay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xadaptec+1430sa.TRS0&_nkw=adaptec+1430sa&_sacat=0
January 8, 20179 yr Community Expert At the moment there isn't really a very option for a 4 port sata3 controller, there are the 9230 and similar Marvell based ones and they work but have issues with VT-d, like Gary posted the 1430SA is very option and sata2 is more than enough for HDDs. If you really want a sata3 controller there are the 8 port LSI 2008 based, like the Dell H310 and IBM M1015, they can be found relatively cheap on ebay but they have to be crossflashed to LSI IT mode to work with unRAID. Can't confirm if any of these has issues with your board but they should work.
