SSD
Bonus round! Can I preclear two disks at once? If so will I see a big performance hit as in both will take twice as long as normal? Unlikely, unless your are seeing slow parity checks. In the old days, a controller could result be overloaded. They're are several potential bottlenecks including number of lanes on a controller vs number of drives trying to do simultaneous I/O. Older technology (PCI controllers) were particularly susceptible to bring saturated. Today life is so much easier! Quote Link to comment
DigitalDivide
Something odd just happened. I was preclearing my drive for the last 5hrs and went back to the main screen and the preclear seems to have stopped. For the one that completed successfully, it shows completed and the Format button is greyed out and you can't mount it. For the one I started 5hrs ago, the preclearing text is gone, the format button is greyed out and you can't mount it...but you can click Preclear button next to it...which I did and it's now restarting from the beginning. Would that be a sign of a bad disk? Seems odd though that I was able to copy quite a bit of data off of it just earlier today...Well we'll see if that happens again. Quote Link to comment
trurl
Unassigned Devices by default won't let you format. You have to go to its Settings and enable Destructive. Quote Link to comment
DigitalDivide
So once again the preclear just seemed to stop about 5hrs in. It didn't complete but there's no error anywhere. I've attached the diagnostics. Maybe you can take a look to see why it's just stopping. I suspect it's stopping once it starts writing. I guess this disk is a write off tower-diagnostics-20170119-0754.zip Quote Link to comment

Even pulling that much information together from the diagnostics is not an insignificant effort. Please help us out by telling us more in your posts. I have no idea which disk you are talking about. Looking further down in the syslog it looks like sdk that is having the problem.Jan 16 10:43:51 Tower emhttp: WDC_WD20EARX-00PASB0_WD-WCAZAH723964 (sdk) 1953514552 ... DigitalDivide
Sorry I was under the impression that in the diagnostics it would show which drive was being precleared. My mistake. I was referring to the drive that you just pointed out, the one that ends in 64 which is unassigned. I had a feeling it was toast. I have two other drives that I was thinking of preclearing but it also had a lot of problems. Two drives are the ones ending in 57 and 69. I think they are pretty much toast as well. 57 shows ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always - 2097 3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 192 188 021 Pre-fail Always - 5391 4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 099 099 000 Old_age Always - 1252 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 0 7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x002e 100 253 000 Old_age Always - 0 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 068 068 000 Old_age Always - 23429 10 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 11 Calibration_Retry_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 152 192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 66 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 198 198 000 Old_age Always - 8296 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 127 110 000 Old_age Always - 23 196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 3 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 54 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 93 and 69 shows - I've removed this one from the system already hence it's not in the current diagnostic report.
