January 8, 20179 yr Hello, When I originally setup my unraid cache pool I used two 120GB drives and one 240GB drives that I had sitting around. I have installed a number of dockers and plugins. I am considering setting up a VM for gaming. I have read that it is perhaps better to have the VM and the dockers on an unassigned drive. If so, I would like to remove the 240GB drive from the pool and just used the 120GB drives (two) for the cache. What is the easiest way to remove the 240GB and reconfigure the cache? Note I am new to unraid. Thank you!
January 8, 20179 yr Unless you actually know why you would put these on an unassigned drive I would say don't bother. Are you having an actual problem with the way they are now?
January 9, 20179 yr Author No, I have not had any problem. Was just trying to prevent any potential problems in the future. I haven't setup the VM yet.
January 9, 20179 yr If you think you will need a lot more storage for dockers and VMs then maybe it makes sense, but assuming btrfs raid1 you already have 240G for dockers, VMS, and cache. It really all depends on exactly how you intend to use things, there is no best way for everyone. And if you find you do need to change in the future we can help you with that too.
January 9, 20179 yr Author Thank you everyone for the reply! I read the FAQ on removing a cache device and found the following description. Since I am running unraid 6.2 this seems like the easiest method. Am I incorrect? Would this let me change the size of the cache? -----------------------From the FAQ--------------------- This procedure assumes that there are at least some dockers and/or VMs related files on the cache disk, some of these steps are unnecessary if there aren't. Stop all running Dockers/VMs Settings -> VM Manager: disable VMs and click apply Settings -> Docker: disable Docker and click apply Click on Shares and change to "Yes" all cache shares with "Use cache disk:" set to "Only" or "Prefer" Check that there's enough free space on the array and invoke the mover by clicking "Move Now" on the Main page When the mover finishes check that your cache is empty (any files on the cache root will not be moved as they are not part of any share) Stop array, replace cache device, assign it, start array and format new cache device (if needed), check that it's using the filesystem you want Click on Shares and change to "Prefer" all shares that you want moved back to cache On the Main page click "Move Now" When the mover finishes re-enable Docker and VMs

After you have done those steps, unless you have moved them back to cache by setting them to cache-prefer they will be on your array, which is not ideal for a number of reasons.
January 9, 20179 yr Author Good point. Since I have not setup the VM yet. I could follow the process set-out above and run the dockers on the Cache and the VM on the unassigned device. Since it is for gaming that would leave it as the only access activity for that device.
