Featured Replies

Got my VM up and running via vnc.  Went to select graphics card and hit apply and my screen just flashes and says it has no signal.  Have to stop the VM and restore back to vnc.  Trying to get it to work.  Any help?

Had to force stop to change back to VNC.  Put all my settings back and now I am stuck trying to boot from cd.  If i press nothing it just goes to the shell.  How can I get it back without loosing all my info?

please post more info.

post your pci devices and iommu groups please.

Also do you have integrated graphics as well as the nvidia card?

Looks like you don't have any onboard GPU and the GT730 is the only one in your system. You might get it to work if you manage to dump the bios of the card.

Check out gridrunners signature for a video guide how to do it.

Or get a lowend GFX card with low powerconsumption and passive cooling to do the unraid job.

IMO it\s always easyier to be able to actuarly see what is going on on the bare metal itself.

So your suggestions would to be to install a $20 lower end card in the system and set that as the default for the Unraid server.  Then set the 730 as the default for the VM correct?  Is there a setting in unraid to set a gpu as the default I may not have seen since I have only had 1 card.

Complete noob myself, but as I have understood it, then yes.

Place the 20 USD card in PCIe slot no.1 and Unraid will pick that card as its default.

Place you\r highend card in slot no.2 and patch it throw to you\r desired VM.

It will cost you on the energybill, but this 10 watt or whatever is good given IMO. Its very to find out what exactly is going on in you\r system, and since the server will mostlikely be in you\r room, then drag a DVI cable to your monitor, and use HDMI from the highend card. Then you can always get in contact with the bare metal of the system...

Will someone else confirm on this  -  Thanks

I'll find out tonight....  I still cant boot into my VM as it just keeps going to shell....  I may just have to reinstall the VM and see if that helps.  No idea how to get it to boot after that force stop

Did you try this:

fs0:
cd boot
cd efi
bootx64.efi

You could also type exit and it should take you to the bios and you could choose your boot device.

Just updated to unraid server pro 6.2.4

Just tried

FS0:

get FS0:\>

cd Boot

get cd: Directory not found - 'FS0:\boot'

cd efi

get FS0:\efi\>

dir

get

.

..

BOOT

cd Boot

get FS0:\efi\boot\>

dir

..

BOOTx64.EFI

Bootx64.efi

Press any key to boot from Cd or DVD......

get FS0:\efi\boot\>

exit

Bios boot option menu

EFI DVD/CDROM

EFI Internal Shell

Nothing else.

Decided to just create a new VM running SeaBIOS to see if that helps with the errors I am getting.

  • Author

Nope.  Still not working.  I installed another card today and its not using that as the unraid display by default.  I need to get into the BIOS to see if I can edit some stuff.  Still cant get anything out of these cards.

give more details what you tried, which slots you put, logs...

what the folks suggested here:

1) shut down your unraid box & put the temporary card into the slot 1 - the unraid output console should be displayed via this card (e.g. login prompt - it's my understanding it's good practice that your unraid should not boot into GUI by default, but should boot into the command line (e.g. the prompt)

2) put your 730 card into the slot 2. Start the unraid box

3) via different pc, login to admin console and create the vm to use your 730 for passthrough - when starting the VM, make sure your monitor is on and set to take that input from 730 (if multiple inputs), to see if there's something displayed

If at any given point it starts but consequent restarts of the VM's are not working, restart the unraid box (i'm having this kind of issue with older GPU)

I would suggest try first ovmf and if that does not work, try seabios.

Also, give us the logs from the VM start (when you start the VM in the GUI, on the right hand side there is an icon for the logs)

Also ssh to the machine and type 'dmesg' - see if something shows in the log relevant mentioning 730, GPU or rom.

Your 730 may not support EFI boot so you may have to install a machine with seabios  (if i remember correctly older evga cards seemed to lack the EFI rom necessary, however, some vendors released updates for their cards)

What I am confused at with you problem is.

1. Are you getting any display from the 730 when used as a second card?

2. the picture you posted of it stuck at the EFI boot screen what output is that from (vnc or your 730)

3. is your problem now the card or the fact you cant boot the VM past the EFI boot screen?

Basically, your 730 will not work in the primary slot to passthrough to a VM. (because you don't have IGPU so the card is primary GPU)

Why is this?

Because when your computer boots it shadows the video bios of the GPU its booting with (primary) and

then when you try to pass the GPU through to a VM it passes because of this shadowed video rom it fails and that's why the black screen.

The solution to this is to dump the ROM from the card whilst it is present as a second card in the system. This gives a copy of the rom that isn't

shadowed. Then the card can be put back into the primary slot and the rom passed through to the vm in the xml  therefore avoiding the problem of the shadowed rom. This problem doesnt seem to effect AMD cards.

Just a note. For any card to be passed through you must also check its iommu group. It should be in there on its own without any other devices.

Having the sound part is fine. So for example iommu group should have no more than this in it

IOMMU group 29
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] [10de:1b81] (rev a1)
03:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 High Definition Audio Controller [10de:10f0] (rev a1)

just to give same advice i got from gridrunner on different topic.

if you have the option in bios, when you have the 2 GPU cards installed, make sure you are setting the primary GPU as per your needs.

if you don't have this option (i personally don;t have it on my asus x99-m ws), then the primary will be the GPU in the first slot.

So when I originally built this I had apparently plugged the 730 in slot

CPU1 slot3 PCI-E 3.0 x 16

I purchased a cheap EVGA GeForce 210 Passive 1024MB DDR3 (01G-P3-1313-KR) last night and installed it in slot

CPU2 SLOT5 PCI-E 3.0 x 16

After the next boot it appears the command prompt from unraid was still trying to output on the 730 by default.  I tried creating VM's with both the 730 and the 210 with no results on a fresh install.  On the 730 I was able to connect to team viewer via another PC and it was very very sluggish and appeared to just have a generic video driver  installed in device manager.  When I booted with the 210 as the VM display Team viewer never connected and I had to do a force shut down.  Then it corrupted my vdisk and no longer will boot.  I deleted the VM and removed the 210 card and moved the 730 to slot CPU1 Slot1 PCI-E 3.0 x 16  (Thinking this is the primary?) Tried to build a new VM starting with the GPU as the 730.  Did not get any output on either OVMF or SEABIOS onmy monitor.  Not sure if its working and not outputting.

I did notice that when creating the VM last night with only the 730 installed in slot CPU1 Slot1 PCI-E 3.0 x 16 that in the VM it is showing NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 (04:00.0) It was (03:00.0) in slot CPU1 slot3 PCI-E 3.0 x 16.  Not sure which is the Primary slot on this MB.  Any suggestions on this?  I will try your suggestion gridrunner

Talked with Zotac last night and they did say that my card should support EFI Boot.

Responses to gridrunners questions.

1. Not sure which slot would be primary.  I'll play with some setting tonight to make sure I have the 210 (cheap card) in the primary slot

2. VNC.  I have found out I believe that when I stated the VM it was actually corrupting my VDISK and hence the no boot.

3. I scrapped that VM.  Now I am just focused on getting a card to output video to my monitor.  going to make sure I have all the settings right.  I did not see a selection in the bios to select the Primary GPU so I will play the shuffle game to make sure the 210 is the primary.

Joshewing02 thanks for the extra info. Ok if when you put the GeForce 210 in the server and unRAIDs console wasn't being output through that card then it was not in the primary slot.

The fact that when the 2 cards were in the server and it was outputing unRAID console through the 730 means the 730 was in the primary slot.

Just swap them around. Make sure you are getting the console to come out of the GeForce 210.

The GeForce GT 730 being (04:00.0)  and then with another card being present is (03:00.0) that's normal. This is just because another card is present it has been assigned a different number.

The card being primary or secondary is not set by unRAID and can't be changed from within unRAID. You have to do this physically on the motherboard, although some motherboards do allow you to change which slot is the primary slot in the bios settings.

Again to pass through any card successfully it must be in its own IOMMU group. Please post your IOMMU groups from tools, system devices. Have a look at this video http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=53573

And if you decide to dump the ROM so you can use the 730 in the primary slot (but really there is no point unless you want to be able to pass through both cards to separate VMS) then this video may help http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=52960

Thank you Gridrunner for all the help.  I played around with the slots until I made the 210 the primary monitor.  I also checked the BIOS and found a setting for display and had the option for "UEFI ONLY" or "LEGACY ONLY".  It was set on Legacy.  I then swapped it which resulted in the Server freezing with no display out of the 210.  I took the 210 out and it worked fine out of the 730.  So it appears the 210 does not support UEIF boot but the 730 does.  Either way since I had to go back to Legacy to make everything work I installed a new VM with the 730 in the secondary slot and set the bios to SEABIOS on the VM Creation Window.  Boom! Everything worked as expected.  Finsihed getting the VM up and running last night and everything appears to be working correct.  Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
