server wont boot without gpu???

Featured Replies

Everything runs fine with a gpu installed but when I try to start my server without it, it turns on but after waiting several minutes I can't access the unraid web gui so I assume it didn't boot. I also can't reach it via ssh.

CPU: Xeon E5-2683 V3 (no on-board graphics)

Motherboard: ASRock X99 Extreme3 (no on-board graphics)

Check your BIOS maybe its expecting a GPU and when there isn't one its hanging? It should be able to run headless.

I've gone through every page in the bios and I can't find any settings for that. One of the reasons I posted here because I haven't had this problem before.

Is there a setting for "halt on" ... with various options, like keyboard or all errors?

also didn't work before the update

AsRock.  Pfft.  ;D

Get a cheap GPU off eBay - I got an old used Matrox P690 PCI-E for £10 for my X99 VM box (an E5-2620v3 on an Asus X99-A) and it works great, and only uses about 1W when active.  I was using an even older PCI ATI RageXL but of course the X99-A doesn't have normal PCI slots.
