January 26, 20179 yr I'm looking for a few hardware suggestions for a simple server. Uses: Storage of multiple TB of files in a home scenario 1 HD stream at a time so multitasking isn't a high priority Nightly WAN backups from my business server (2GB database file and incremental attachments) I have: 4x8GB PC4-17000 memory 7x 3.5" hard drives (5x2TB and 2x500GB) 3x 2.5" hard drives (2x2TB and 1x500GB) Data migration will be from a Drobo FS What are your suggestions for hardware? I don't need to use what I have but it would be nice. Budget $400 or less if I don't need to spend it, low power usage preferred.
January 26, 20179 yr Does your streaming requirement include transcoding? If not you could go with a Pentium G4400 or similar. Put it on a consumer board like Asus or a server class board like ASRock or Supermicro with some ECC RAM. 8GB should be fine based on what you describe. A server class board could potentially handle all 10 SATA drives or you can add in a PCIex SATA controller.
