March 11, 201016 yr Hi all, New to these forums. I've been doing my research and have decided that an unRAID box is a perfect solution for my home media storage. I've come up with a parts list and am hoping this list can help others looking to build one of their own under a tight budget. I have a few questions from the community regarding a few of my choices, but here goes: Case: CoolerMaster Centurion 590 - $69.99: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015A2JSA/ Drive Bays: CoolerMaster 4 in 3 (x2) - $46.50: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00129CDGC/ Fans: CoolerMaster 120mm (x4) - $15.83: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000O8I474/ Power Supply: Corsair 550-Watt - $69.99: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WU2FGK/ Motherboard: Biostar TA785GE - $69.99: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002NN5M0U/ Processor: Sempron 140 - $41.80: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002I25RWO/ Memory: 2x1GB Kingston Value RAM - $49.99: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Y9YJI6/ Sata Expansion: 2 Port Sil3132 SATA PCI-E x1 - $14.43: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10407&cs_id=1040702&p_id=2530&seq=1&format=2 System cost: $378.52 (Without an additional 4 port SATA card - see below) Shpping: Free via Amazon Prime The only piece I am missing is a 4 port SATA pci-x card for the last of the 12 drives. I won't be needing one for awhile as I'll have 8 drives to fill up first with this build, but any suggestions would be great! I'll be starting small with only a few 2TB WD Green drives. Ah, the beauty of unRAID! I calculated my estimated power consumption and it looks to me that the 550W Corsair will do. Does anyone see issues with this and the need to bump it up to a 650? I want to have enough juice to power 12 drives eventually. Hopefully I've come up with something that will serve me well. I'll be throwing this on its side under the bed (small apartment with no extra closet space). With good clearance around the server, I'm hoping all of the 120mm fans can keep it cool and quiet. I'm still not sure how I'll place them for the best airflow. Any suggestions there would be appreciated as well. I'm really glad to be joining this community! Can't wait to start serving my HD content from this new toy to my mac minis spread out throughout the apartment UPDATE: I just realized that my motherboard choice only has 1 PCI-E slot. Back to the drawing board Anyone have alternate suggestions on a current cheap AM3 board with 6 SATA and 2 PCI-E?
