avahi_normalize_name() failed. warnings in log

Featured Replies

I just started getting these the other day in my log file. Otherwise system seems to be functioning fine.  Anyone have any clues as to what this is? Do you guys think this is anything to worry about?

Actually I just introduced a new drive (hgst he8) into my array the other day and that was about the time I started seeing these warnings in my log.

Thank you!

I did a search and found a recent question about something very similar. Unfortunately, it elicited no replies.

I don't know if it's related in any way to this. Post your diagnostics (Tools -> Diagnostics) and we'll have a closer look.

Hmmm... I haven't been able to spot anything amiss and Googling the error message doesn't reveal very much. It may well be benign.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my diagnostics John.  Hopefully it will just go away.  The server is running fine so it's probably nothing to worry about.

I'm having the same in the logs,

Jan 2 12:53:23 unraid avahi-daemon[5138]: avahi_normalize_name() failed.

Is there any solution?

Same.

That warning suggests you have something in the network with an invalid hostname, could be the Unraid hostname itself, but most likely another device or even a container on the same network. Assuming the server name doesn't have any special characters, you can try to find it by disabling the Docker service and removing all other devices from the network, then start/reconect them one by one.
