February 2, 20179 yr I'm just musing here and wondering if it's possible... Is it possible to set up unRAID with a couple of data drives, install a Windows VM and then use the VM to read NTFS formatted drives that are connected to the same unRAID machine and copy the data over to the unRAID drives? Background is that I have a Windows server with quite a bit of data that I'd like to migrate to unRAID. I need to use the current data drives in the new unRAID server. I can squash the data down onto two NTFS drives so that I can add two drives to unRAID. Which leaves me with the issue of reading the NTFS drives and migrating the data to unRAID.
February 2, 20179 yr As long as the drives are simple ntfs volumes (not encrypted, spanned, etc) the unassigned devices plugin should be able to read them.
February 2, 20179 yr Author To clarify - unRAID can read the NTFS drives in order to copy the data across to the unRAID drive array?

The Unassigned Devices plugin allows unRAID to read and write several different filesystems, including NTFS. A Windows VM is way overkill for this simple task.

P.S. Apparently I'm stalking trurl. I keep getting the new reply warning after I type a reply, but I'll post anyway.

Happens to me all the time, usually with johnnie.black I usually go ahead and post anyway since I went to the trouble to type, and sometimes different ways of saying the same thing can help people understand.
