Preclear plugin

Recommended Posts

So after doing a little digging, i found buried down in a forum that the dynamix buttons plugin can cause problems with preclear. I uninstalled buttons, and it seems to have resolved my problems with my unassigned SSD. Then I tried to run the preclear on my 10tb sas drive again. it seemed to start fine, then speeds dropped down to about 5 mb/s, and my syslog started filling up with errors again. i've attached the preclear log and my syslog, would really appreciate any thoughts here. The disk seems to pass SMART tests, but i keep having problems with it. Its a used sas disk from ebay, with low hours. wondering if it's the disk, maybe my controller or cables, i dunno...

Disk is formatted with type 2 protection, you'll need to remove that.

Man, it looks like you saved me from having to return this drive - thank you so much. Currently 60% through the reformat running the command you mentioned. Just out of curiosity, i saw another command that it looks like some guys used to fix these type 2 protected drives, wondering if it basically does the same thing, or if one is better than the other? here it is:

sg_format -v --format --size=512 /dev/sXX

thoughts?

Nope - scratch that.

That one is probably for when the drives are using a sector other than 512B, which happens when people get drives used on netapp and similar enclosures, but I don't have any SAS devices so not familiar with those commands.

Just commenting on the thread to confirm that if you get preclear failures do a memtest.

I ran a preclear through an LSI 9207-8i on a 4tb drive and it passed.

Tried running preclear on 3 more 4tb drives through the onboard Sata and kept getting post read failures even though SMART showed no errors as well as the Extended test on the drive.

Ran memtest and it found some errors on some of the memory i had in the system. after replacing the bad memory and testing again with memtest to make sure its good, pre-clear passed.

I just wish i ran the memtest before running 2 preclears on the disks.... this could have been solved 40 hours ago for me

Hi have been getting some errors when trying to run preclear.

So, with my new shiny Easystore 14TB drive freshly shucked. I put it in my Disk Array (NetApp DS4246 Disk Array Shelf) to get precleared and working to add to the array.

Well, that didn't go to well. Here is a snip from the log when trying to preclear.

Now Preclear does see the device but when I click on it to start it just pauses. I have tried this with the tape trick and without, the result is still the same. I'm very curious about the no space left on the drive line.

Any suggestions and I have attached diags to this for review.

Update:

I swapped the shelf just to see if by any chance if it was a specific tray that was in error and preclear started

Then it failed at 6%

I'm not sure if it's the drive or something else. I'm going to see if I can just connect to a PC to see if it mounts and reads

Preclear post read failed.  Any suggestions here.  I got a failure at the end of pre clear.   This drive is connected via an onboard sata connector that I don't normally utilize.   The WD red drive is running pretty hot as well 47-50C. log attached.

Preclear post read failed.  Any suggestions here.  I got a failure at the end of pre clear.   This drive is connected via an onboard sata connector that I don't normally utilize.   The WD red drive is running pretty hot as well 47-50C. log attached.

i'm a little confused right now...

my unRaid setup is running for 5 month now and i'm pretty shure i installed this plugin and i precleared my devices.

now i wanted to add another drive (and was going to preclear it), but the preclear plugin is gone :(

so i did some "research" (google, yay) and found this post - apparently the plugin "is causing more problems than it is worth."

is this still true? also in spaceinvaderones tutorial it says "THAT THE PRECLEAR PLUGIN HAS BEEN DEPRECIATED FROM UNRAID 6.4 ONWARDS".

still everybody seems to stil preclear discs?

what am i to do? :)

oooh, found it on page 111:

sorry!

Hello everyone.

New guy here. I just setting my Unraid unit. Got some used disks and new ones.

I used this Preclear plug-in for check up and one of my new disk came with strange output. I was hoping someone here could help me out to figure out whether I got a bad disk or there might be something wrong with Preclear.

At the end, Preclear says it was successful.

And here's some output. Please note that I got two pause and resume, due to Array Restart.

In Second attachment, Preclear Log, from line of "Aug 11 09:53:57" I started getting strange message, and eventually Preclear killed hung process.

I am currently running 2nd round, and the the result is very similar. I have another 20 hours to go. If anyone interested, I will include it here.

Thank you all in advance.

New user.

Just starting out trying to get my bearings on Unraid.

I have a question in regards to a Preclear using the Joe. L 1.20 script on my WD Red 12tb hard drive.

It took 80hrs 40mins 12 secs to complete 1 cycle.

Is this normal?

Is there something wrong with my drive, since I see the Post-Read average was only 91 MB/s.

When I precleared a WD Red Pro 12tb hard drive using the gfjardim 1.0.16 script, it only took just over 36hrs.

I understand that the Pro drive is a 7200rpm drive, but it precleared in half the time of the 5400rpm Red drive.

I'm currently running Unraid 6.8.3 Stable and Preclear Plugin - gfjardim version 2020.05.07

hi all ran pre clear on new 3TB ironwolf drive.

Pre clear finished without errors but it said some attributes near thresh. For some reason the log was not saved but below is SMART attributes. Can someone please let me know if I should return the drive?

Great plugin so far, thanks for the efforts. I am having some speed issues on 'post read' of a 2TB WD RED, so far its been in post read 2 days and its 50+% only. Any ideas based on the attached preclear report? i have re-seated on the sata connection only other item i can try is on a different sata interface but i have precleared and run drives twice the size on that connection. is this a sign of any issue with the drive?

Ok, strange issue here.

I spent some time pre-clearing a drive a few weeks ago in preparation for installing it in the array.

Today I added it to the array but it is running a clear on it? I didn't connect the drive to anything after finishing the pre-clear.

The only change is the pre-clear was done via USB in the enclosure. It is now installed via sata naturally.

Is there a way to let unraid to know it was already cleared?

Hello, I am currently running one preclear cyle on my new drive, but the speed is awfully low. I already precleard two similar 8TB drives which took 46 hours to finish the preclear a while ago. My two current drives are WD80EZAZ  and the new one is a WD80EDAZ. I know that the new drive is not helium filled and runs really hot (54°C), but it should not be that much slower (32MB/s for around two hours). The drive is still sitting in the default WD MyBook enclosure. The drive is connected via a USB 3.0 connection. Any ideas why the drive is so much slower? I am pretty sure that I had a different Motherboard and CPU (B85M PRO4 and i5 4460) when I precleared the first two drives.

My current server looks like this:

MS-S0891

Xeon E3-1230v3

8GB DDR3 UDIMM ECC

2x 8TB WD80EZAZ

1x 2TB ST2000DM001

1x 500GB Intenso SSD Cache

PicoPSU

Node 304

Any help is apprectiated. Thanks!

Edit: Fixed it myself. XHCI was disabled in BIOS.

This suggests that the USB drive did not present the drive to the system in the same way it is now being presented via SATA, and as a result Unraid is not recognising the pre-clear signature.   This not that unusual - many USB enclosures do this.  If that is what is happening then you will have to let Unraid proceed with the Clear.    At least a Clear is much faster than a typical pre-clear cycle.

Another common mistake is to format the drive after doing the pre-clear not realising this wipes the pre-clear signature.

Good to know, I never saw this mentioned and in fact saw people recommending to pre-clear drives before shucking.

I didn't format it, that one I figured would screw it up.

Just sucks to use 50tb of the 180tb yearly usage before even using the drive. Add in a few parity checks and before I even use the drive I could get close to the limit.
