Preclear plugin

Have you updated the plugin? There is an update released day or two ago for that exact issue.

If you have updated and the problem still is present, send logs so the author can take a look.

I have not done that (Completly new and don't know how) I thought I found a thread saying this issue was because this was starting at sector 64 which is what mine were doing so I do think this would fix it.  Is there a thread somewhere that can point me to the updated plugin?

Just click on PLUGINS in the GUI and it should automatically check for updates.

WOW......Feeling soo stupid.....lol  found it and got it updated......I was assuming I had to edit a script or something much harder than that lol......got my drives preclearing now....hopefully by the weekend I can setup my array and really start to get this going......thx again for the help from all!

The test preclear was a success, but at the top of the Log file there is a line (just under Preclear Disk Version: 1.0.6) that says:

Disk /dev/sdd is a SSD, disabling head stress test.

The disk is not an SSD, but is connected to a cheap PCIE SATA board. I think it's this:

[1095:3132] 06:00.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3132 Serial ATA Raid II Controller (rev 01)

I'm going to assume the SSD identification won't cause any problems and start another PreClear run.

@gfjardim - Thanks for the updates and the excellent support.

Hello, I'm getting the error "unRAID's signature on the MBR failed - Aborted". I have followed suggestion found in the forum (check hdd is properly installed, test several cable, change sata port, even hard disk).

Attached is the smart report from the first seagate disk I tried to add.

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated to resolve this. My array is at 94%.

I update the plugin today. I start another try few minutes before posting.  Zeroing: 59% @ 196 MB/s (2:31:00) Preclear Disk Version: 1.0.6

Looks like there was a bug in the plugin. Post-Read: 24% @ 207 MB/s (0:57:51).

Thanks for the update.

unsure if its a good idea or not but i’ve been stopping and resuming progress with each update. there have been 2 updates since i started the most recent 3-cycle tests on my 3x USB attached drives. No errors or failures so far, just wondering if anybody wants to weigh in on whether or not that is required.

It's my understanding from previous posts from gfjardim that you can update the plugin even if preclear sessions are running.

Usually you can do that unless there's a bug in the resume mechanism itself. With  the last 2 updates it should be fine - in fact, just the first was a bugfix, the other corrected some information exported to the logs.

I just shucked two 12TB WD White's and only one seems to have preclear'd without any issues.

I've tried the old Preclear plugin, then the preclear docker when I saw notes that the plugin wasn't working well with 6.7 and then the most up to date plugin once updates were made for the MBR issues others were receiving.

This one 12TB drive keeps on slowing down my unraid to a crawl. Hogs all I/O. When using the docker if left on for a while it takes minutes to run the docker stop command.

The pre-read seems to run fine but it's not until it starts writing zero's that 1-2 minutes in the dashboard shows all CPU's maxed out. iotop shows the dd process writing the zero's at a high % and another process labeled [kworker/u16:7+flush-8:32]. see attached screenshot.

Logs don't show much. I'm unable to find how to turn debugging on based on what gfjardim said a few posts back.

Here are the preclear plugin logs for the drive itself

Nothing strange on your logs, but I've experienced some slowness on some USB derives before. Which speeds are you seeing on those writes?

For this drive and the other 12TB that successfully worked I was seeing easy 120MB/s.

The drives were plugged into the same SAS card as all the other drives in the array. all the speeds I was seeing both read and write seems normal.

It's just this one drive grinded everything to a halt once writing zeros.

I've currently got it booted off a trial unraid instance on my main PC doing its preclear.

@gfjardim  I've been working on the UD "hangs" and have found that when a mounted remote CIFS share goes offline, the 'lsof' command hangs, regardless of the mount point being checked.  You may need to do some timeouts on the lsof commands in preclear if you use them.

Thanks Dan for the heads up! I'll take a look soon!

I have a brand new external disk that has failed a preclear twice now, see logs below:

Any ideas why this is failing?

I have a brand new external disk that has failed a preclear twice now, see logs below:

Any ideas why this is failing?

Please update your plugin.

When I go to plugins it does not say there is an update. Also, I have pre cleared drives on this same server quite recently without issues. I have presently moved this drive to a different server that just successfully pre cleared a similar drive without issues. Strange

Post your diagnostics file, please.

Hi gfjardim,

I've been having the same issue as some others with a new 12tb HD trying to pre clear but keep getting "unRAID's signature on the MBR failed - Aborted" after is succeeds to writing the pre clear signature. I tried rebooting the server, the pre clear plug in is up to date as well. I have my logs linked below, could use any help!

Log

unRAID is now having libevent-2.1.11-x86_64-1 installed by default.

Preclear plugin is downgrading this to libevent-2.1.8-x86_64-3, please see below.

Not sure from which unRAID version libevent is included, but could you please remove the downloading and installation of libevent for unRAID v6.8.0 for sure?

Thank you!
