Preclear plugin

Recommended Posts

My array is NOT started (I have some problems) and I have four 5Tb drives running preclear via the plugin and I am out of memory (on 32Gb system).... I have 99% in use!

Google is your friend.  A quick search found this site:

    http://www.binarytides.com/linux-command-check-memory-usage/

As I read it, you have quite a bit of overhead available.

I had done free and cat /proc/meminfo (hence info above)... but I also found the caches didnt clear. Have cleared them and have free memory now but the web interface is still very sluggish. Maybe best to let this 1st pre-clear finish and then stop. Reboot server and do passes 2 & 3 ...

I have found that using Screen is the best way to do many (I've had 4 or 5 going simultaneously on 24G system) pre-clears at once.  Interesting thing is they show up in the webgui!  So you can monitor them from the browser.

I ran 4 drives and 3 of them ran and finished, took a long time but its expected.

the fourth has been sitting at this stage for 2 days, im not sure if i need reboot and try to preclear or leave it and consider it a no good drive.

post your diagnostics file.

Moved on, i got 20 drives for free if 2 fail Meh, once i get done with the others i will re-try it.

Thanks for the help.

Am I reading that correctly? You signed a deal which got you 20 drives for free if two of your batch failed?

I interpreted it as meaning he got the 20 drives for free so was not too worried if 2 failed.  I wonder which is the correct interpretation?

Ok, guys, officially out of beta stage!

Thanks a lot for all your input.

'grats!

If you guys have a moment, could you take a look at this related post.  Looks like 2 of us have the same problem with the preclear plugin hanging on the boot record.  Is there a diagnostic or log we can check?  I've looked in the preclear log directory on the flash drive, and there's not entry for this disk.

I never saw anything about this, but clearly it's a script problem. Nothing I could do from my side, I'm afraid. Please post this here to someone help you.

Feature request:  any thoughts on supporting multiple scrips in the plugin (user selectable via drop-down menu)?  Such as the original preclear using Joe. L's most excellent script, the bjp999 modification and perhaps Webo's badblocks process if he were to be interested in sharing his script or bless the work of someone to script his process?

Am I doing something wrong?  I can only get 1 preclear to run at a time.  I told the process to start on 2 drives, but it will only run on 1 or the other.  The second drive stays paused.  Is this some setting I have messed up?  Thanks, Andrew

What exactly do you mean by "paused". Post a screenshot.

Looks like I was wrong.  Whem i posted earlier the timer was not progressing on the second disc or vice versa.  Now it seems both timers are progressing but the samsung drive is 1 MB/s and not reporting temp correctly.  Both drives were sitting on my desk all night long and should have been exact dame temp but they werent when i placed them in the chasis.  The samsung hasnt budged off 13 degrees and i know ambient is higher than that.  I suppose I'll scrap that drive?  All 3 of these drives were out of older computers i had lying around.  Figured I would use 2 of them as a cache pool and add the current 4TB cache drive to the array as a data.  Screen shot attached via teamviewer im not home.  8458944810aef0fc971b66dd8b7b3509.jpg

Well upon trying to post a log and exceeding 192 KB I unziped and found my syslog was 10MB!!  Seems I have had a whole bunch of errors going on all day.  Guess this drive is toast?  Is there anything else that you would like to see or am I correct in assuming trash the disk?  Thanks!  Andrew  PS. Ill delete this crap after you respond so that it doesnt clog up your thread.

Here is a link to the folder since it exceeds the attachment limit here.
