File Activity Plugin - How can I figure out what keeps spinning up my disks?

What is your disk hardware?

parity is a 10 tb seagate ironwolf, the 2 data disks are 10 tb wd red. all connected via the hp p840 raid controller in hba mode.

something about the raid controller is already fishy, as for smart data i had to manually set all drives to smart controller type = sat to show temperatures on the main tab, although with default smart also worked but would only show * in main tab as temperature.

You might be onto something there.  @JorgeB is the disk and controller whizard.  Maybe he can offer some assistance.

p840 raid controller

Not familiar with that one, but we don't recommend RAID controllers for Unraid, only true HBAs.

i wouldnt mind replacing it, but i have no idea how to check what would be compatible with my backplane. is there anything in particular i have to worry about? or can i just google pictures from connectors to find out what kind of connector that is and buy a card that has 2 of the same?

Googling the p840 looks like it uses double wide SFF-8087, which is uncommon, first time I've seen those, but if you get for example one of the recommended LSI HBAs you just need to need to get a cable that matches the LSI on one end, regular SFF-8087 (SAS2 models) or SFF-8643 (SAS3 models) and whatever you have on your backplane.

i think the double wide is because one of the cables actually goes to 2 connections on the backplane (the other one has half as many connections):

the backplane i have is here:

https://www.serverschmiede.com/de/hp-dl380-gen9-g9-12x-35-lff-hdd-12g-sas-sata-backplane-742794-001-777284-001

maybe from that port you can tell me what hba and cables to get? with my limited knowledge i would say i need s card that has 4 ssf-8087 ports and 3 ssf-8087 to ssf-8087 cables?

sorry to bother you, but server hardware is not my strong side and 250 euros+ is not something i want to blindly try...

and back to the topic: as you are the disk controller wizard: have you seen this "no spindown" behaviour with other cards and is it common that they only spin up the data and not the parity drive?

Edited by Michael H

Backplane appears to use regular SFF-8087, so you just need a couple of SFF-8087 to SFF8087 cables, or SFF-8643 to SFF-8087 if you go with a SAS3 model.

Is there a way to exclude a particular share(s) from being monitored or at least logged?  The Unraid server is also acting as a syslog server in my setup and due to the quirks of the Unraid syslog server setup, syslog needs to be on an array/pool drive.  At the moment every syslog entry is monitored and logged by this plugin.  It's info I don't really need.

21 hours ago, dlandon said:

Normally the syslog server is on the cache or a pool device.  Cache and Pool devices can be set to not be monitored.  The syslog server doesn't have to be on a array device.

Understood, but what I needed File Activity for was to monitor what was happening on one of my pools.  The same pool the syslog is on.  At 19:30pm every day I had something deleting/archiving some files in a particular share and for the life of me I couldn't find what was doing it.

But all good now.  Was just wondering if there was an option somewhere that I wasn't aware of.  Scrolling past the syslog entries won't kill me.

Cache and pool devices are not normally spinners.

You can organize the log by shares and only look at the ones you want.

I cant get this to log any information. The process seemingly starts, but now rows are listed in the file activity section

I have checked the syslog and cant see any errors about inotifywatches.

I can see the process running

I don't see anything in your diagnostics that would be an issue,  You are creating file activity that would be logged?  Try creating a file on one of your shares and then save it.  Does it log that file activity?

I was opening files from my general share and nothing was being logged

What's a general share, and how were you opening them?  Did you try my test to see if it would log that?

Sorry, just a regular SMB share called "General" which stores photos, documents etc.

I havae also tried creating a new file in there. Nothing logged

as a side note, I also have the openfiles plugin, and opening files shows records in there

but not in the file activity plugin

Does the status in the upper right hand corner of the file activity show 'Running'?

It does. Running in green

The plug in seems to stop after 60 seconds?  Any troubleshooting I can do?  Seems to start fine, but nothing logs to screen, refresh a few times and then status returns to stopped.

Post your diagnostics.

Having a similar as described above. Diagnostics attached.

Hit start, Unraid progress animation shows for a few seconds, page refreshes. Status never changes from 'Stopped'.

Ah, figured it out. Plugin will not start if "Enable for Cache and Pool Disks?" is set to "Yes". Seems to be working if toggled off.

This normally happens when there aren't enough notify watches, but there is generally a log entry saying there aren't enough.  Try using the 'Tips and Tweaks' plugin and increase the "Max Watches 'fs.inotify.max_user_watches':" value and then starting file activity.

thanks for your quick response.

I use the default value 524288. Now I tried 1524288. The problem is persisted.

By the way, I am run on 6.10.0-rc4. Any known compatible issues?
