February 14, 20179 yr I think I'm going about this the wrong way.. I'm going to start from scratch with a decent budget and try another path. I will try and make a long thought short I've never used un-raid before on physical hardware only in vmware vm to see how it works. I've got a i7-2600K, asus p67 sabertooth motherboard and 16gig of ram sitting here not doing anything and I'm thinking for what I want to do it would be a good start for a unraid server. So what do I want to do you may ask, good question! I have plex now running off my Nvidia Shield Pro and my media is on a attached 5tb external usb3 hd. I have my work windows 10 VM that I use when I work from home and I have to load it on my gaming rig which sucks down the system for other "fun" things. My question/problem is this.. that motherboard doesn't have enough sata 6 ports and I want to buy a new case and 5x3tb wd red drives. I already have 3 three ssds I want to use for the unraid cache pool and VM storage. So what can I get for say sub $150 bucks that will allow me to have the ssd and HD's all transferring at the best speed they can? Like a... what is it called.. HBA card? Also, you think that processor and ram is enough for the 1 maybe 2 1080p transcodes and a 2core windows 10vm ( which may or may not be running at the same time )? So to recap I'm looking for a HBA card or raid card to use with unraid that will support 4x3tb wd red disks ( 3 data x 1 parity ) and three ssds for starters. Also if you have any sweet cases that you just love using I'm all ears! Thanks for any information you can provide!
February 15, 20179 yr Processor is enough Ram is enough. Look in the hardware wiki for unraid and see what fits your profile/needs/and then price it out. I'm sure others may have hba recommendations too.
