February 15, 20179 yr Hey guys. I'm looking at unRaid to power my new build. I am not sure if what I have would work, so I'm looking for advice before buying the remainder parts... as such I can't install unRaid and tinker atm The primary purpose is mainly for VMs for gaming x2. (2 gamers 1 CPU setup). Secondary purposes include more VMs for diff. coding evironments, and some light docker apps doing file serving/streaming/torrenting. I'm not all that interested in raid arrays (prefer JBOD). Hardware I plan to use: Samsung 840 Evo 250gb - recycled hw Samsung 960 Evo 500gb (x2) or 1tb (x1) WD Green 2tb - recycled hw WD Green 3tb - recycled hw I7 7700k 4c/8t on ASRock z270 taichi 64gb 3000mhz ram R9290x x2 (gigabyte / sapphire) - recycled hw M.2 nvme Questions - Is nvme passthrough and booting off those by the VM engine doable without a vdisk? - is nvme passthrough going to be near bare metal experience? - if my unRaid setup goes kaput (e.g. dead USB), would I in theory still be able to boot 1 os directly off that nvme drive, using full hardware resources? (Ignoring driver issues) - If passthrough is not doable, is using a vdisk stored on the nvme drives going to give acceptable (near bare-metal) experience? If vdisk is no different, i may focus on buying 1tb nvme instead of 2 500s cos it's slightly better $/GB. Gfx questions: - those gfx cards are the same but different make (diff. memory manufacturer too), would they be difficult to find/assign for passthrough / will there be any issues? - Linus from LTT mentioned at least an onboard video or separate unassigned card is required to boot unRaid, but he only tested with the separate card. Do I have anything to fear if I'm relying on the onboard video? - can the passthrough cards be individually overclocked by the guests? Thanks for your time reading, that's all I have for now.
