No GUI on boot

Featured Replies

Howdy,

Could really use some help.  I have attached my syslog.  I can not figure out why my machine will no longer display the GUI.  I have manually removed all the plugins but still no GUI.  Please, any help would be appreciated.

The problem appears to be with your SAS card, which keeps resetting. Disks seem to be not responding but I can't tell whether that's the cause or a symptom. I'd check the cabling to the disks and any backplane - break and re-make all connections. I'd make sure the card is properly seated in its slot, maybe try it in a different slot if you have one. Make sure it's sitting squarely and the mounting bracket is holding it in place rather than, as is sometimes the case, trying to lever the card out at an angle. Your diagnostics zip (Tools -> Diagnostics) might reveal more.

I recently saw another user's SAS card doing the same thing though more often but, despite asking for help, he seemed unconvinced and never reported back so I don't know if he ever fixed it.

Read a few more posts and ran a mem test to find that one of the 4 DIMMs failed.  I am now trying again.  I have reseated the controller too in the process and reseated all the cable connections.  I now have the GUI but things still not working right.  Looks like I may have a series of issues.

It turns out after removing the bad RAM, I also had to update the firmware on my LSI SAS9200-16e controller to : http://www.mediafire.com/?pp68tpv9bcy96py

Found it in the HCL.  All is good now and my array is up and running.

Thank you to all the read the thread and hope this helps others using this controller

Big hint.  Run a memtest first when things go really wrong ... I guess

That is at least my takeaway from this experience.  A lot of time wasted doing other testing.

Agreed. You're not going to get very far with a bad stick of RAM.
