VM not running with 4GPU's

Featured Replies

Hi!

I need some input about an issue when I want to assign 4 RX480 GPU's to a windows server VM.

With up to 3 GPU's it's running fine no matter which one of the 4 is assigned, but when I add the 4th makes VM not booting.

Also 4 VM's with 1GPU each is running perfectly.

After starting the one VM with 4 assigned GPU'S I need to kill the VM via "force stop".

Is there any known limitation I can only assign 3GPU's per VM?

Nobody out there who tried to run 4 GPU's in one single VM?

I'm running 6.3.0-rc6 and still after some more trying I has no luck...

Have you tried enabling Above 4G decoding in your BIOS? If you have that option.

Yes, its enabled.

Without 4G encoding enabled the board wont post with 4 gpu's installed.

(its a z10pe d8 ws)

No matter which cpu cores are assigned (cpu1 or cpu2 or mix), its only working with up to 3 gpu's.

I was trying a Win10 VM with same result.

Up to 3 GPU's its working perfectly, but after assigning a 4th GPU make VM no boot.

Could anyone (Limetech in best case) confirm that 4 GPU's assigned to a single VM is working with KVM or has some general issue?

how do you assign 4 GPU's to single VM?

i was under the impression that only 1 GPU per VM is possible...

oh, you can assign each available pcie slot from your board in KVM.

In unRAiD the easiest way is to hit the green "+" beside the vga device in VM edit page.

This way you can assign all gpus detected from device list.

In fact its possible to run your gpus in crossfire or sli too as you can see here:

But in this way I want to utilize the gpus with gpgpu application (opencl).

Its a shame that I can'T use 1/4 of  possible calculation power now...

Never tried this ourselves with 4 GPUs, certainly not with AMD either (AMD GPUs tend to be more finicky when it comes to QEMU/KVM).  Wish I could be of more help, but you're a bit in uncharted territory here.

From my experience I only had issues with nvidia cards with xen and kvm;-)

But this is my first 4 gpu workstation and it seems that not many people use 4 costumer cards for gpgpu.

Maybe some crypto miner guys could be familiar with such hardware, but I fear they are on bare metal mostly...

If you find the time to apply 4 gpus to your machine I assign it to a random VM, I would appreciate to hear how it works!

If you send me one of your cards I can try 4 here ;)

When I get my water cooling installed on my 480 cards to make them single slot, I will have space for 4 cards (I think). But I have been saying I'm going to install the water cooling before Christmas.... 9_9
