February 18, 20179 yr I work at a computer shop so I have been fortunate enough to acquire a lot of parts for free in order to build by unRaid server. The only things I have had to buy are the bracket for holding a 2.5" & 3.5" HDD in the ODD bay, an eSata to Sata cable, 4gb of ECC memory and a 120gb SSD. The 4 RE2-GP drives are out of an old server, they have 3 years 9 months of power on but they cleared fine, the parity drive has less hours on it with only 6 months. The specification in my signature has only cost me £37 + the cost of unRaid basic. It does everything I want it to, even though the CPU isn't up to transcoding, I'm fortunate enough that my devices use direct play though Plex. Very happy with it.
February 18, 20179 yr Nicely done! However, I think there may be some who have built unRAID servers completely out of spare parts not spending a thing!

My backup server was just spare parts leftover after upgrading various parts of my main server at various times. Of course, I have upgraded a few parts in my backup server since I first built it from those spare parts.
