Strange behavior with 2 NICs in the server

Featured Replies

Hi experts,

since yesterday i have activated my second NIC on unRAID and observed a strange behavior, but first to the Story:

The onboard NIC - a Realtek GB-adapter was not properly workin on unRAID 6.2 so i implemented an old Intel PCI GB-NIC.

Now, with 6.3.2 the Realtec-NIC seems to work ok and i decided to change the NIC back because the throughput of the old Intel adapter was only 96MB/s.

Yesterday i activated the NIC in the BIOS, made all configs and then the strange thing:

I gave both adapters different IPs - Onboard 192.168.2.250, Intel PCI-NIC 192.168.2.244

The config-file on the flash was created automaticly by "Settings", "Network Settings" and look like this:

# Generated settings:

IFNAME[0]="eth0"

DHCP_KEEPRESOLV="yes"

DNS_SERVER1="8.8.8.8"

DNS_SERVER2="8.8.4.4"

DNS_SERVER3=""

DESCRIPTION[0]=""

USE_DHCP[0]="no"

IPADDR[0]="192.168.2.250"

NETMASK[0]="255.255.255.0"

GATEWAY="192.168.2.253"

MTU[0]=""

IFNAME[1]="eth1"

DESCRIPTION[1]=""

USE_DHCP[1]="no"

IPADDR[1]="192.168.2.244"

NETMASK[1]="255.255.255.0"

MTU[1]=""

SYSNICS="2"

Bonding and bridging was disabled, the Cable was connectd to the Realtk-NIC and the Intel-NIC was not connected.

The Server was not able to reach the DNS-Servers from Google AND the web interface was reachable ober BOTH IPs even though the Intel NIC was NOT CONNECTED.

Then i did a reboot of my router and the Server but this didnt help. In the meanwhile the server can reach the inet, but is terrible slow when i do an update

of the plugins - this takes about 20seks per plugin and Docker is not able to do some updates - still not working.

So my question is now, if there is an additional config (not only the network.cfg on the flash) or a special Docker Network config.

When i open the "Fix common Problems" plugin it tells me there is still an Error and i shall reboot my router but i have done this 3x and it didnt help.

So its not clear for me what to do next, because i want to keep the PCI NIC as a spare if something happens with the onboard NIC

Ok - there is NO WAY to bring this config with 2 NICs to normal work - dont know why...  ???

I removed now the PCI-NIC and recreated the network.cfg on the flash. After several reboots it seems working now with the onboard NIC - strange again.

If there is an additional setting/config/setup for the network somewere else then please let me know - thanks  ;)

EDIT: CRAP! Not working - what is going on in this v6.3.2 ? Am i mad or what is going on with this network.cfg?

Everything is done like on 6.2.4, BUT NOT WORKING - what the hell...

I cant reach the inet anymore...

Both of those NICs have addresses on the same sub-net. How does unRAID know which one to use to access the Internet? Try putting them in different sub-nets.

Tried it - no way - if i use the Realtek NIC as the main NIC, there is no way to get it to the inet - FCP plugin says there is a DNS problem - but there is no DNS-problem at all.

And now i cant reach my server anymore over the LAN... nice - i am really confused

Shall i recreate the network.cfg or can i delete it? Will it be created new?

Can someone tell my, whats wrong with my DNS-Settings?

Yes, delete config/network.cfg and config/network-rules.cfg (if it exists) on your boot device then reboot and start your configuration again. By default it will start with bonding (mode 1) and DHCP enabled so whichever port you have connected you should be able to access the web GUI.
