Moving data disks

Featured Replies

I have a new unRaid server that I would like to move the data disks to from an alder build. The new unRaid is the latest build. The old drives are in RiserFX. Would it be possible to physically move the disks to the new system, copy the contents to a blank drive formatted in XFS, and then reformat the old data drive into XFS and assign it as a new data disk?

Thanks,

Lev

Just set a New Config that includes all the disks, let parity resync, then you can basically follow the method from the sticky in this subforum.

Could I just add it in outside of the array, just so that I could copy the data off of it onto an array disk, and then , wipe it, reformat it as an XFS and add it?

Almost right. The correct steps in the correct order for the method you are describing would be:

Mount disk with Unassigned Devices.

Copy data from disk.

Add disk to array. unRAID will clear it at this point so parity will remain valid. This will take a few hours (for each disk) depending on size.

Format disk.

Repeat.

If you use the method I gave, you will get them all into the array at once without clearing anything, then you can copy them and format them without any need to clear any of them. The only thing is you would have to New Config with all the disks and rebuild parity once at the beginning. Then proceed with the method in the sticky.

Both methods assume you have already built parity. If you haven't, then there is absolutely no reason to not New Config with them all and a parity drive and build parity for the first time. Then proceed with the method in the sticky.
