copying files from vm to cache drive issues

Featured Replies

I've looked thru a large amount of post hoping that someone had something similar to my issue but could not find one quite like my issue. Going to be a long one no TL;DR version.

Setup:

unraid box, with a quad nic

pfsense two networks 10.20 and 10.30, also with a quad nic

un-managed switch gigbit switch (netgear dumb)

Network setup, unraid on 10.20 network

VM on the 10.30 (why because this one is on a vpn connection that routes internet traffic thru it ) In case you're wondering yes pfsense has the correct rules for each network to talk to each other.

Sab, sonarr blah blah are all dockers save to /mnt/cache/appdata on the 10.20. network same as unraid (for clarity)

VM are stored on cache drive also /mnt/cache/vm

Interface eht0 for unraid 10.20.XX br0

interface eth1 (not exact number, but you get the point) 10.30.x.x br1

Wheeww all that for the meat of my issue. any computer that is on the same network as unraid  had no issues copying to any of the shares and the cache. I could copy to and from all day long. However the vm that is on the 10.30.x.x can read, mount, copy from any of the shares to it self. When i try to copy a share and or cache drive one of two things happen. One it begins to copy but the speed is about 32kbits and then it times out. Two it copies about 52/mb and it gets to the end and I get a network error only options are retry or cancel, and it copies most of the file but not all of it.  I've tried ubuntu, windows and mac and the same result. However if i moved the vm to the same network as unraid, boom no issues. I did have one oddity the ubuntu vm experience the same issues then one day for no apparent reason it started to copy with no issues to the cache drive and got solid 50/mb. I updated to the newest stable version and after the reboot it went back to having the issue. I don't think is the version of unraid because i was having those issues prior to the upgrade.

After all that you're thinking is your pfsense box, i would agree except for the fact that i can copy from unraid to the vm, I can send commands to the vm from a computer on the other network no issues. The vm can access other devices on the 10.20.X.X network with no issues.  This is the error that i get when i used windows "error 0x8007003b" and yes I've tried the suggestions. I've also read the issues when on a vpn but that's copying to a computer on the other side of the vpn.

SO any suggestions tips or tricks I would appreciate it.

EDIT: I cannot copy from unraid to the vm when its on the other network.

Not sure I can help, but looking for a clarification. When you say " When i try to copy a share and or cache drive one of two things happen ", are you copying to a user share or a disk share? If it's a disk share, then I've got nothing :).

If it's a user share (and it has cache enabled) though, perhaps the problem is copying to and from the cache drive over the 2 networks? Try copying to a disk share from the the VM and see what happens.

Again, no technical reasoning why this would be an issue, but since you haven't received any more knowledgeable responses yet from Networking Gurus, I thought I'd throw it out there. At the very least, it bumps your topic back to the top ;).

To share, no disk, that's get too confusing

I'm pretty good at networks, i will check on the cache settings, It just seems weird that i can access file folders and files with no issues from the secondary network. Is not a permission issue. Its just very odd.  Thanks for the input, at least you gave me an avenue to look into.

Another oddity i discovered, I try to copy it copies some of it and they it fails. When i try to delete it, I can't because it tells me something has it open. Very odd.
