Anybody planning a Ryzen build?

First of all, I want to thank everyone so far in this thread for all the research and information you've put together. After reading your comments, I decided to build my very first server using Ryzen and unRAID. I put this build together a little over a week ago, and it's been running great:

 

unRAID v6.3.5 | Ryzen 5 1600 | Gigabyte GA-AB350M-D3H (BIOS update: April 2017) | EVGA GeForce 8400 GS Passive Graphics Card (for BIOS only) | 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 | 500GB Samsung 850 EVO (cache & VMs/dockers) | 2x8TB WD Red HDD (one as parity) | EVGA 450W B3, 80 Plus BRONZE | LG Blu-ray Burner WH14NS40 | Fractal Design Define Mini MATX Case | VM: Windows 10 Pro (4GB RAM; CPU cores 9, 10, & 11; VNC graphics) | Dockers: Plex, MakeMKV, HandBrake, OpenVPN

 

It's mainly a Plex media server (plus DVD/Blu ray ripping), Time Machine backup, and occasional Windows machine right now; in the future, I intend to add a Vega GPU (whenever those are available...) and run my Windows VM as a gaming system.

 

I followed the advice in this thread as far as Global C-state (and a few other settings, I think), and the only times in the last week I've shut down the server is when I wanted to change some settings. It hasn't failed on me once. I have assigned the GeForce 8400 as the graphics card for the Windows 10 VM and the VM worked fine when accessed through VNC and Windows Remote Desktop, but I've never actually plugged it into a monitor to see if the graphics were really passing through.

 

The only issue I have is that I can't quite access the temperature sensors, even when using the advice earlier in this thread with modprobe it87 force_id. I've tried a couple of the 86xx numbers, but I can't get the CPU and MB temperature labels; all I get are generic "temp 1," "temp 2," etc., and I don't know which temp is which. If I figure out which number to use for this motherboard's ITE chips, I'll post it in this thread.

It's certainly worth trying out the other options, but failing that I would reboot and go into the BIOS and try to record nominal values for the CPU/MB temp and CPU fan.  Then boot into unRAID and see which of the items in your "sensors" outputs comes closest and use those.  Afterwards you can always run a Prime95 or similar test and see if the output values follow the expected progression.

For what it's worth, this has always been the behavior that I have experienced.  Even when I was doing pre-testing with an Asus F2A85V-PRO motherboard and AMD A10-5800K Trinity 3.8GHz FM2 Quad CPU.  The three GPUs I tested were the ASUS Radeon HD 3450, ASUS Radeon HD 4350 and Asus Radeon HD 6450.  Dunno if it's something specific to AMD CPUs, ASUS motherboards or ASUS Radeon GPUs ... or even the Windows OS?

 

Are others seeing this same sort of behavior where you shut down the Windows VM and it doesn't return you to the unRAID console?  Or is this just how it's expected to work?

Something i found in the Level1 forums about npt=0

With npt=1, you get very good KVM CPU performance, possibly very near native speed, but on some workflows the GPU seems to have bad performance. Note that this is not for all applications/games, and depending on what software you run there may not even be a difference. For example, I have a radeon rx460(a low end card) and with npt=1 I got the same 1920x1080(AA x4) score on unigine heaven benchmark as running on bare metal(I keep a windows partition to perform these comparisons as ryzen-supporting software improves). I also tried some old games such as neverwinter nights 2 and the performance doesn't seem to suffer.

 

Another strange behavior: on windows 10 as guest, I got bad performance on google chrome when gpu acceleration is enabled, but on windows 8 google chrome runs perfectly! This strange behavior makes me think this npt=1 is a pure software issue that may soon be fixed in the future. Maybe @wendell learned something about this from his AMD contacts 

 

Now, there seems to be some wrong ideas that running kvm with npt=0 yields to horrible CPU performance(while fixing GPU performance). From my experience this is definitely not the case! What seems to happen is that when npt=0 and -cpu host is passed as qemu parameter(apparently the default for libvirt), qemu will only allocate 1 CPU for the guest, so this could give the impression of the bad CPU performance. If you tell QEMU to emulate an older CPU, it will pass the requested number of cores to the VM which will yield a very acceptable performance. The CPU performance is not as good as with npt=1, but more than good enough for gaming: Currently using a VM as headless gaming server with in home streaming and it works very well(can get consistent 40-60 fps on GTA IV, but using a RX 460)!

Via the commandline, but you first need to shut down all the vm's and stop the libvirt services.

There's a step by step in the link.

I'd be interested to see any Nivida GPU passthrough XML's from a OVMF boot. I can't get it to display now, it was before but I was getting stuck at the UEFI screen. My seabios system works well but performance is not perfect.

 

Regarding passing through your main GPU. I actually found that Unraid never really lets go of the GPU, but it does not recover after you shutdown the VM.*This is related to passing through your primary and only GPU.

 

By this I mean.

Start Unraid with GUI and then start a VM, If you have two keyboard or mouse plugged into the system and only 1 passed to the VM. If you move the mouse still connected to Unraid I can see the Unraid GUI trying to draw on top of the VM. When I shutdown the VM everything goes black.

 

The actual effect was the UI was drawn 3 or 4 times but squashed, reminded me of some strange display issues I've seen years ago. I was able to find the shutdown button though.

Some minor updates.  A new "system stability" BIOS has been posted for the ASUS Prime X370-PRO motherboard, version 0612.  I've been on it for about a week and have not encountered any issues.  Likewise, I upgraded to unRAID 6.3.5 in a similar time frame, and things are going smoothly.

 

I know there's an unRAID 6.4 pre-release RC available, but I haven't had a chance to load it yet.  Might have better support for Ryzen, since it's based on a Linux 4.11.* kernel.

 

Also there appears to be a ASUS Prime X370-PRO beta-test BIOS with the AMD/Ryzen AGESA 1.0.0.6.  If I have time I may load that as well.

 

Just throwing it out there for those who are looking for a weekend project.  :-)

Took the f6g bios for Gaming 5 x370 board, includes AGESA 1.0.0.6.

 

 

Think I've seen someone else post about it already, the IOMMU groups are better.

Can some VM XML's be supplied for gaming ryzen builds that are working well?

 

Still working on trying to use "npt=0" but I'm still seeing slow down even though I switched to OVMF and some audio dropouts, that been said I'm getting almost a 50FPS increase most of the time.

I have a config that is mostly stable but only with npt=1. I do get the odd audio dropout but thats since switching to OVMF, did not happen in seabios.

 

Tried many changes to XML based on suggestions, looking to see what people actually are using today now.

 

EDIT - A better question is how many people with similar platforms enabled npt=0 or did you not feel the need?

 

I get around 70 FPS in Overwatch less in other games with npt=1 and its stable at the moment with a missing audio issue every so often. The CPU is around 70% with 4 cores, similar with 4+4 core also the cores and pairs are isolated. When testing with npt=0 I get 130 FPS. But with 4 and their 4 pairs total 8 vcores they reach 100% quite often and each time cause stutter. With 4 hover around 90% and cause stutter when they reach 100%.

Okay, so I have loaded the ASUS Prime X370-PRO beta-test BIOS 0803 with AMD/Ryzen AGESA 1.0.0.6.  I am still running unRAID 6.3.5, though.

 

The BIOS upgrade seemed to take longer this time.   As usual, I had to go in and redo all my preferred settings.  The system accepted them and rebooted, then did nothing for like 10 minutes.  I finally powered down, counted to 10, and started it up again and this time it worked.  No idea what was up with the weird hang.  I've rebooted about 3-4 times since then trying different things, and have not encountered it again.  Just be-aware that this may occur, at least the first time after the BIOS upgrade.

 

Otherwise, my system temperatures are a bit higher, but we're in the middle of a heat wave and that may have something to do with it.  My memory is rated at 2133, so I'm not testing for the 3000-4000 speeds that others are looking for.

 

I did turn off all the ACS override stuff, but the "new" IOMMU table doesn't look all that impressive:

I ended up switching the ACS override back on, since my Windows 10 VM wouldn't start without it.

 

Unfortunately, that's about all the time I have at the moment.  I'd still like to switch from the USB audio to the onboard audio, and will hopefully find some time to poke at that soon.

Same board, same issue with the grouping. I updated to latest 6.4rc3 and no change.

Guys - what's your experiences with Windows 10 and either 4 cores or 8 cores, which performs better for you in gaming?

I passed through my 980ti today and getting really poor physics scores in 3dmark, In firestrike extreme i get 6fps on just the physics test.

I dedicated 8 ryzen cores in the usual pairs 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. GPU scores seem normal so not sure why my CPU is taking a big hit in physics.

What's everyone else's scores?

Last week, I had upgraded to the ASUS Prime X370-PRO beta BIOS 0803 with AGESA 1.0.0.6 ... so far, the server is running smoothly.

 

Today, I tried a test run with unRAID 6.4-rc2 (sorry, it's what I had on the thumb drive), but the later Linux kernel didn't include any new support for the sensor chip on the ASUS Prime X370-PRO motherboard.  Since I was only curious, I built a temp thumb drive to run the test.  Afterwards, I booted back on my regular thumb drive that's running unRAID 6.3.5.

I tried enabling Global C-States on 6.4-rc5, and my system ended up crashing within an hour. I can't say for certain, but I disabled it again immediately after and have been rock solid since.
