Anybody planning a Ryzen build?

Recommended Posts

sorry for jumping in here , but hope you guys can help.

i am planning to upgrade to a ryzen build - possibly 2700x, but i am having a challenge to select the MB.

i have a 24 slot chassis, using all of the drives + a cache. I have currently 2 x 8 port SAS cards PCIe, and then a combination of onboard sata ports and older generation PCI cards providing the remainder.

i want to go the passthrough route (ie one main system that performs both unraid and dialy usage)
thus i will need :
PCIex16 for main system graphics (im currently running an RX480) - my wish would be to have this passed through and unraid on headless as it will save a previous PCIe slot for a secondary GFX card

2x PCIex8 for SAS cards 8 ports

at least 8 onboard sata ports (or alternatively, 3 x 8port SAS cards)

cache drive?

32/64GB DDR4 3000 RAM

the following ThreadRipper board seems to have enough PCIe slots, but i just cant seem to locate a AM4 socket that fits the bill:

https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/X399 Taichi/index.asp

obviously i would prefer to select a system that is proven to be stable :)

TIA

Just another option, I'm running the Asus Prime X370-Pro and same here, been extremely happy.  I'm using an LSI 9211-8i as I'm starting to run out of SATA ports.  More details are in my signature... any questions, feel free to ask.

hmm ok that looks more like what im planning. are you doing passthrough though?  your mb/cpu does not provide onboard graphics capability.
and then another question about headless passthrough i am trying to figure out. what happens if you shutdown the VM? will the unraid-host remain on and then display unraid CLI?

I'm planning a Threadripper 2950X build with 32gb ram m.2 cache 3 4TB hdd and msi Meg creation motherboard, the purpose is mainly to run multiple VMs and docker, I was wandering if I should go with overclocking the cpu or just lifting the power cap on the motherboard and let the autoboost do its thing. any ideas?

That doesn't sound right at all. I get around 850 in cinebench with 8 cores in a vm with my 2700x on the Gigabyte gaming 5 x370 and thats with a stock bios. Check and see what governor unRAID is using. Should be ondemand. Thats sounds like its running using powersave or something. I game and everything in my vm.

Anyone have a x370/x470 Mobo where the bottom PCIE card is in its own IOMMU group? I was really hoping to send this PCIE Slot to a VM with an I350-T4 but with my MOBO Taichi x370 on l4.81 it does not seem possible. Ive attached my IOMMU Groups below for comparison.

My Asus Prime X370 Pro, got this. But the B350 has that too, just use the ACS_Override kernel patch with the multifunction flag, you can google that or search this in this forum, its explain a few times here.

The IOMMU grouping I posted was with the ACS_Override both flags, I think this is as far as it can be split which is why I was thinking I might need another MOBO. So your ASUS prime has the PCIE chipset lane in its own IOMMU group? The 2x PCIE that go to the CPU are already in their own IOMMU groups.

Im right know not running unraid on the system with this mobo, but i remember that every pcieslot was in its own group, that means, after the flash of the bios to the latest levels, most of the time the uefi ugesa or something similiar its called updates help a lot out there. Have a look at that here on my old post.

To be honest, without a detailed architecture diagramm of your board and pcie lanes i dont think i can cleary refer to which port is what address and so on, so you are pretty basicly up to try it out. PCIE lanes in the iommu group dont follow the network card naming standard p0s0 and stuff like that, even if they would you still would need a basic understanding of your mobo architecture and most of the vendors dont include this in the desktop segment. Supermicro gives you that, but thats pretty much server/more servery.

Hi Ryzen team

hope somebody following this thread have advice. I am having a challenge, where passing through the only ATI card to a windows VM on a ryzen system is working (Seabios without UEFI) , but then the  $%$^ hits the fan when i install the ATI drivers (crash during driver install, and after that VM wont start again.

anybody encountered this and maybe have a possible thing i could try?

more details here :

thank you team!

Gigabyte X399 Designare EX

Ryzen Threadripper 1950X

I still haven't been able to get the temperature sensors working on this board

I haven't been able to find any new developments on the status of Zenstates + Threadripper. I know that CA Fix Common Problems still throws up a warning in 6.6.2 & 6.6.3, but I haven't been experiencing any issues whatsoever.

I too haven't been able to get the system temperature sensors working. I installed Nerd Pack + Perl + Dynamix System Temp plugin with no luck in 6.6.2. I haven't tried in 6.6.3; I would have to reinstall all the plugins & Perl to check again.

Hello

Got an R7 2700 and the X470 MSI Gaming pro AC motherboard, below is the IOMMU grouping with latest bios firmware, Unraid 6.6.6 and I havent played around with ACS_Override or anything.

Posting this with questions, but also since I couldn't find any info on the IOMMU grouping of the x470 MSI GAMING PRO CARBON, so hoping this will help anyone searching for the IOMMU groupings of the board.

How will this work for an Windows 10 gaming VM, GPU is in it's own group (Group 13) and so is the USB host controller (Group 16 and 12) for mouse/keyboard/headset.

I see the majority of you are using 2700 or other 8 core Ryzens.  Anyone using a 2600?  I already have this CPU and i'm just curious if you anticipate issues with unraid + plex w/ 1 stream + gaming VM.  Currently have 16GB RAM and will be using two 500gb 860 Evo's for cache in parity.

I'll be going down this route this weekend so I'll report back. The 2600 could be had for around $100 this weekend (assuming the included game value) so I pulled the trigger. I'll be pairing it to a MSI B450 Tomahawk and an old gtx 730.

From the looks of things, it seems like a lot of people have it running with no modification. We'll see though.

To add the the previous post, just upgraded to the 2600 and it's been flawless. This is with a Asus X370-Pro which also allowed me to easily step up the RAM I selected to 3000 (simple click in the BIOS selected all of the right parameters). So much faster than my old system.

I have the same problem.  My AMD RX580 passes through without complaint, and I am able to see the vm on the monitor attached to that card, use the passed through keyboard / mouse while sitting in front of it.  However Windows is using the generic windows driver for video.  Device manager is not showing the RX580 anywhere in the device tree.  I tried uninstalling the generic video device and rescanning but the generic device did not uninstall and the rescan did not find the AMD GPU.  I tried installing the drivers from AMD and it did just as described above, a long period of unpacking stuff, then when I actually selected the device and said go, it started the install with only a simple progress bar in the bottom of the install window, then about halfway in it blinked the screen a couple of times then went black and never comes back.

In order to get the VM back I have to stop passing the graphics card in, then go in with the VCN and run DDU.  I can then reboot the vm and pass through the graphics card again and I am back to ground zero, graphics card working (kinda) but the generic windows driver driving it.  The objective is to have the card passed through AND have windows acknowledge that the card is there in device manager AND use an AMD driver to drive it.

Any help getting this working will be most appreciated.

I am using the 2600.  It works fine.  BTW I intentionally used a 2600 because it was cheap while I wait for the 16 core / 32 thread ryzen 3xxx to drop.

Asrock X470 Taichi w/ Ryzen 2600

32GB RAM

500gb Samsung SSD assigned to cache

1 TB NVME in the socket unassigned.  VM machines running off of that.

250 gb SSD unassigned to pass through to Windows VM

Windows 10 Pro VM with 8 gigs RAM

3 cores and associated threads passed through to Windows 10 VM.  "cores" 6/7, 8/9, 10/11

250 gb SATA SSD passed through to the Windows 10 VM

AMD RX580 passed through but drivers not driving it.  See above post.

Linux Mint VM with 4 gigs RAM

GTX1070 passed through to Linux Mint VM

2 cores and associated threads passed through to Linux Mint VM.  "Cores" 2/3, 4/5.

Sounds like my machine except I'm running the 2700x. Curious, the only bios setting you change is the c state? I just disabled it and so far my machine has been stable but was just curious what changes you have made.

I have that norco case (or similar).  I am not currently using it but I was using it for my Unraid server.  It serves well for stuffing a ton of older smaller drives into a case!  I inherit drives from a server as I update the drives in it.  At one time I had about 20 drives from 320gb up to 1 tb, for a total of around 14 tb unraid.

Now I have a newer newegg brand case with 4 total drives, a 5tb for the parity and three 3tb drives for storage.  A bit lower powered!  :)

I really didn't make any changes, including c state.  What is that and why do we change it?

Edit: It seems that the c state thing is a gen 1 Ryzen issue only?  AFAICT with the 2600 and the latest Unraid that issue goes away.

BTW are those WD drives the 5400 drives shucked from desktop backup boxes?  How does that work speed wise in Unraid?

Yeah my server has been crashing after a few days. I just disabled cstate so we shall see. Was just curious as you had the same board.

Yes they are the shucked versions from BB. They are just for "Linux ISO's" so speed don't matter. All my VMs are on the nvme TB drives.
