February 23, 20179 yr Hello everyone, I just finished building my very first unraid server, plugged directly into my modem/router/switch combo, and everything was working fine. Then, I picked up the server and moved it to its final location on the upper floor of my house, and connected it to my home network through a switch located on this floor. Note that every computer on this floor is accessing the web through this switch, as the modem downstairs is too far. Now the server doesn't have access to my home network, despite being plugged in by ethernet, I can't access the webGUI, and the only info I saw on the console is that unraid tried several times to grab a DHCP lease, succeeded and then lost the carrier. Anyone here having any idea why unraid can't connect to my home network through a switch ? Someone I know told me that having two switches on the same network was bad, and I have too little experience to tell... Thanks in advance for your answers Edit : please delete this topic, the issue was due to one of my roommates using weird network configurations for testing purposes, sorry... February 23, 20179 yr It would be worth swapping out the ethernet cable or moving the server to the location of a working PC and using it's ethernet cable to determine whether you have cable/hardware issues. You don't want to daisy chain switches if you can avoid it, but it's Ok to have more than one if they are both directly connected to your router.
February 23, 20179 yr There's absolutely no problem with daisy chaining switches. Just be aware that everyone on one switch will be sharing the link to the next, which is why some switches allow uplink ports to be aggregated for more bandwidth. Having one switch upstairs and one downstairs makes a lot of sense.
