March 19, 201016 yr Hi. When I migrated all my files/folders from my old storage locations (Windows File Server and an external USB disk enclosure), I created Windows Folder icons, like for my Applications, Id have a Windows Folder icon which looked like the Windows XP CD icon, for Music, it had an icon which looked like a Speaker icon, etc... To enable this feature you'd do the following (Windows XP): 1). Right-click on the folder, Click on the Customize tab 2). Select Change Icon... 3). Under the "%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll" path I just select a icon of choice and click on OK This is quite handy with shortcuts to scripts to make it more appealing on the desktop too. These Windows Folder icon folders all have a desktop.in file within them which predict what icon the folder would look like. I've noticed that this no longer works once I copied all these folders on my unraid server share, I just have the basic yellow Windows folder icons instead. The desktop.ini files still remain, but don't show the customized icon. The only conclusion that I can come up with is that my previous storage solutions I used have before used a NTFS file-based File System, though I heard that this feature works with other NAS solutions. It isn't really important, but would be good to have back again. Thanks.
March 20, 201016 yr I'm no expert but if a took a guess, i would say that the data for the custom folder icons is stored in the metadata in ntfs. unRAID uses ReiserFS (i think). I don't know if it supports custom folder icons in the metadata. if you copy a file from your computer to the unRAID server and then back again, does the folder still show the custom icons? also im not sure if ntfs works this way but when u choose "%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll" and pick an icon it might just be a pointer. when u move the folder to a directory on unRAID that pointer would no longer be valid.
March 20, 201016 yr Author I've copied the files/folders originally from my windows server to a test freenas server to test out, and it retained the customized folder icons. freenas formatted the disk share as ufs file format, unraid uses reiserfs. freenas Is built on unix unraid is built on Linux. It could be file system thing, why can freenas do it but unraid can't, strange.
