VM not starting after adding gpu, and GUI stops working.

Featured Replies

To start I have a xeon so no onboard graphics and I went through some hassle figuring out that my new hardware wouldn't boot without a GPU installed in the server. When trying to start my VM after passing through my GPU the UnRAID GUI becomes unresponsive and stays that way until I restart the server. The Dockers all still work but the VM never starts (don't see anything over HDMI or the network).  My best guess is that this has to do with my first problem where the server wouldn't start without a GPU. Anyone know if this is the most likely cause? Also adding a second GPU isn't an option, no space in my 1U case.

Quit a few have had similar problems and adding a second GPU dedicated to the unRaid console has cured this.

not sure what to suggest if you've no room for second GPU.

OP didn't say which specific CPU they had, but there's a good possibility that there is an alternative CPU part number with the same specs that does include onboard graphics. Selling the current CPU and purchasing one with graphics would probably be cheaper than changing the motherboard and everything that entails.

That said, gridrunner (spaceinvaderone) has a video describing how to dump the video card bios so it can be used in the VM to possibly get around this issue.

I guess I will just keep using it without the gpu. I was hoping to use it as a guest gaming pc for when people come over but oh well.

I have a 14 core xeon so no alternatives with onboard graphics sadly. Hopefully one day I will upgrade to a supermicro server board with built in graphics and this should solve my problems. Also thanks for the info about the video. I'll have to look into that!
