Replace two empty drives

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have two empty 1TB drives in my fully functioning UNRAID. I'd like to replaced these with bigger drives, but since there are empty I didn't want to have to rebuild them, etc...

Is there an easy less time consuming way to replace a couple of empty drives without rebuilding them.... Can someone point me to a valid knowledge base article for UNRAID v6?

Thank you,

-Reuben

If you don't want to bother with rebuilds, you can simply do a "New Config" and assign the drives you actually want to use.

Note that this will mean you're "running at risk" until the new parity sync completes -- so be sure you do a parity check BEFORE you do the New Config to confirm that everything's okay before you lose the ability to replace any failed drives.

Thank you!

So I can pull the two empty drives out and installed the new drives all at once? - then power up and hit the new config button and assign all the drives I'm keeping in the UNRAID?

Yes, then you will have to rebuild parity, which is normal for a new config. As gary said, you will be unprotected until parity resync is complete.

Perfect, and thank you guys!

One other note:  After the new parity sync has completed; do a parity check to confirm all went well.   You should always do this after a new parity sync or a drive rebuild [After a drive rebuild you should do a non-correcting check;  in all other cases I always do a correcting check; but some folks prefer to always do non-correcting checks unless they're doing one to explicitly correct errors that a non-correcting check has identified].
