March 7, 20179 yr Hey Everyone! New to an Unraid Setup and I'm looking for a few pointers. I see the the vast amount of setups, applications and overall system configurations is a little overwhelming. Word of warning, i have not gone through a large computer build for quite some time. The more I read, the more I feel this is the system for me. I don't do any encoding of sort. Would I be interested in it? of course! I use Kodi with dedicated Kodi units around the house. I havent tried Plex. All in, i am looking for a usable media (video/music) storage with network streaming, additional backup means to upload to Crashplan/Carbonite (family photos/videos) and other suggestions or application i come across here. Currently, I was using some form of Flexraid setup on a Win 7 computer. Somehow the computer auto-upgraded to Win-8 and i haven't setup FlexRaid on the new OS. I am just sharing files over SMB on my home network. Nothing external/vpn setup. The system build is as follows: - Antec Sonata Case -Corsair VX550 - Athlon II 255 X2 - ASUS M4A87TD -DDR3-1600mhz 2x2GB -240GB SSD - crucial -3x2TB - Older seagate -2X1.5TB - older seagate If i were to go new I have been eyeing some inexpensive builds using Lian cases paired with the Pentium G CPUs. I would start off with 2x4TB HDDs and start the process of transferring everything over. I could save money by reusing the power supply, SSD (cache drive) and case. I feel the only reason (correct me if i'm wrong) to go with a more powerful CPU is if i were to transcode, either on the computer or to plex remote devices. The biggest question is the support of my current board to handle above 2TB drives. I'm reading mixed information. I believe it does register in the BIOS but the onboard RAID controller doesn't see it. There is alot here but im looking for some guidance and suggestions on the next step. Thanks! EDIT: I am trying to stay below $500 dollars. The more I read up i think i will be replacing the CPU/Motherboard and start the system off with 2x4TBs, and add the remaining ones in.
