LimeTech Server questions: buy chassis+cage alone? noise levels?

Featured Replies

Hello!

does anyone know if it's possible to purchase LimeTech servers with only the chassis and drive cages?

Such an option is not listed on the product page of course, but I was wondering if it's possible to put in a special request and have the price lowered accordingly.

I don't care if it's not that much cheaper, I just don't want to end up with something I don't need and wouldn't mind saving a bit money in the process.

Also, for anyone's purchased an MD-1510 or RB-1200, how noisy are they?

I have a 20 drive 4U rack mount and the sucker is noisy!!!

I would really like to ditch it for a LimeTech server instead if they are more quiet, even if they are not living-room/bedroom-quiet...

(p.s. I am willing to sell the 4U for cheap)

limetech use off the shelf parts.

the parts are listed in their description pages for the prebuilt boxes.

trying to struggle to find a reason why youre finding this hard.

noise levels depend on the fans used in the hotswap stackers. not as loud as a dedicated storage rack like a norco 4220 but definitley not desktop suitable quiet. you will be changing fans.

undervolt your fans in your rack, they should be 4 pin ging to yellow and black, change the black to red to giv eyour fans 7v. theyre probabnly all in a single chain of molex pass thoughs so you really only gotta change the one that connects to power (small tweezers or something to pull teh pin out and move it).

I have a MD-1510/LL. I'm not sure what you mean by just chassis and drive cages, but I bought it without drives but fully assembled as I had some drives around and the additional drive costs would have bumped it completely out of my budget at the time.

My desktop machine is virtually silent as in I don't notice it at all. I don't hear the fans, etc. and I was hoping the MD-1510/LL with the fans on low would be quiet enough for me to put at the end of my desk nearby, but I can hear the air noise of the unit. I've situated the MD-1510/LL about 8ft away or so from my desk and the fans are on their lowest setting and I don't really notice it at this point.

I'm not certain its a fair comparison to my desktop though when it comes to noise as I set out to build a silent desktop ;D.

ETA: If I was going to do it again, I might have tried to build a 5-10 unit system that was quieter but cooling would still be a pain I think...meaning there'd be noise.
