Upgrading CPU's

Featured Replies

Just picked up a pair of six core CPU's for my 'monster unRAID server' which currently has two quad core Xeon's totalling 16 threads, now I'll be moving up to 24 threads with these new CPU's. Its a modest upgrade, but the price was right and I've found that the extra cores will come in handy with plex streams.

Currently have two E5620's and I will be upgrading to two E5645's virtually the same processor, just six cores instead of four.

Definitely a nice bump => from a PassMark of 4875 to 6559 ... a 35% increase in your "horsepower" :D

Yeah and for $100 CAN shipped, not bad I think!

Very good price -- a 35% bump for $100 is certainly an excellent deal :D

The pricing for these older E5 Xeons is amazing -- the same is true for the registered RAM modules.    You can build dual Xeon systems with 64GB or more for just a few hundred $$ these days.    Very tempting !!

... just to be precise, it's humming along with FOUR more cores ... which support 8 more threads.

Nevertheless, it's a very nice upgrade :D

YOU GOT CORES FOR DAYS!!!

Yeah no kidding, need them for plex, want to support at least three to four transcoding streams comfortably. Right now I have three cores dedicated to the docker for a total of six threads.

What 1366 socket motherboard are you using with your E5645s?
