Stuck on what UPS to purchase

Featured Replies

Can anyone offer some simple advice as to which UPS to get?

According to http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/ my power requirements are server load wattage is 271w (I think my PSU is actually 550w).

I've had a look at some of the APC UPS systems but as with everything there is so much choice and having almost zero experience with a UPS doesn't help.

Ideally I just want something that will survive a power outage and last maybe 5-10 minutes so the server can be shut down properly if needs be.

I'm in the UK. I've had a look on scan and amazon but prices vary a lot and I'm not sure what models specifically support controlling the server to initiate a shutdown.

271W seems an awful lot.  What are you running?

For example, my unRAID box uses 40W on load, and just over 8W idle (it's a Pentium G4520 on a H170 board with 16GB RAM and 4 drives).

I have the following:

Asrock X99 extreme 4 motherboard

Single Xeon 2620 V4 CPU

16Gb ECC RAM

7x 7200rpm SATA disks

3x SSDs

1x Nvidia Geforce 710 (for VMs)

1x PCI-E NIC

I have no idea what power it actually uses on load, I don't have a way of measuring it.

I'd say that's more like 150W load, I was getting about 100W that with a X99 and Xeon E5-2620v3.

As for a UPS, I'd look at a 1000VA at least.  I have a 750VA APC and it gives me about 20 minute run time on my low power server, the switch, and a fe other low powered items like a RaspPi.
