March 21, 20179 yr I have the following available to me from parts which have been scavenged from EOL servers: 2x E5620 Xeons 20gb ECC RAM Intel S5500BC Motherboard (6x SATA ports) 128gb SSD Several 500gb hard drives 2x 2tb hard drives (one water damaged but still works and passed Seatools) 3x 1tb hard drives I want to run several VM's, I already have pfSense up and running with 2 NICs passed through, I also need to run Ubuntu, Windows 7 and a Server 2012 VM. The Windows 7 machine deals with PXE booting, I'm not sure if this will work over the bridge, or if I will have to add another NIC and passthrough that one too. I also want to run several dockers and have parity (either single or duel). My first thoughts were to run one of the 2TB as a parity for the remaining drives but I'm not sure where to store the VM images, should I add an additional hard drive as an unassigned device solely for the VM's? Suggestions welcome, data integrity/resilience is the important thing here.
March 21, 20179 yr The 500gb drives are undoubtedly quite old and slow, and the 1gb ones may not be much better. Is investing in some more SSDs for cache/VMs plus a larger hard drive or two an option?
